MAJOR FUCKING SPOILERS
Just finished watching Twin Peaks series 3(: The Return) for the second time. It cemented the series as a whole as far and away my favorite TV series of all time I loved the original series and especially the divisive and ambiguous finale. I was very worried that a new series might destroy the mythology and mystery, but was also excited. 15 minutes into the first episode and my fear subsided.
I think there may even be an argument for season 3 being better than the original series. Seeing as the whole thing was written by Frost/Lynch and the whole thing was directed by Lynch, as has been mentioned, it’s pretty much a 15 hour DL film.
That’s not to say it wasn’t without it’s flaws. A few minor quibbles including: - Freddie the guy with the powerful fist took the silliness just a little too far for my liking. - Casting Matt Lillard in a pivotal role.
However it also featured some of the most sublimely brilliant work Lynch has done. A few highlights: - Episode 8, pretty much a transcendent stand alone experimental film which harkened back to Eraserhead and served as beautiful and terrifying TP “origin story”. - I was satisfied with the first (false) ending at the end of episode 17 and was thinking, “oh there’s still one more episode”, but the final episode absolutely blew me away, taking the series to a whole other level and adding so many more layers to the mystery and mythology. - I loved all the seemingly random characters with their weird ailments and problems that showed up throughout the series suggesting the sickness and darkness engulfing the town/world and Carl Rodd as a sort of de facto Guardian Angel. - I loved most of the music, only Eddie Vedder didn’t work for me. - I loved the Monica Bellucci dream, Laura Dern as Diane, Cooper’s superimposed face over the final scenes of Episode 17, Dougie, the Mitchums, Sandie, Candie and Mandie and the angry accountant that arbitrarily despatched Tim Roth and Jennifer Jason Leigh’s characters. - And of course Carrie/Laura’s final harrowing scream as maybe everything just came back to her…
Twin Peaks: The Return is pure Lynch at his singular best and I think it will appeal more to Lynch die-hards and fans of his later work like Mulholland Dr. and INLAND EMPIRE than fans of the original series.
So anyone else: Did you love it, hate it? Are you a fan of the original series, Fire Walk With Me, David Lynch in general? What did you love, what didn’t work for you? Did it answer enough, anything? As unlikely as it is, do you want a Season 4? Which was your favorite musical performance?
My personal favorite musical performance:

I'm a die hard Lynch fan and I agree that this third season would probably only appeal to folks like us. I've only seen it once but plan on buying the Blu Ray to re-live the experience before I could go into more depth. But man, that episode 8--unlike anything that's ever been on TV in all its history. I can't believe they let him get away with it.

I recently watched it for the second time too. Its so good.
I agree about Freddy.
Episode 8 was great. Im so glad they let Lynch do his thing this season.
Good music. I have to think about who my favourite performance was. Nine Inch Nails is definitely up there.
I for one could not get into the Diane character, it was better when she was just a tape recorder. Laura Dern is a fantastic actress though. I took me a while to warm up to Tammy. Chrysta Bell is a great singer by the way. She did an album with David Lynch, called This Train.
I dont think it answered as much, it only made the world and story bigger.

The Cactus Blossoms were probably the most quintessentially Lynchian. I will check out that Chrysta Bell album I can see why you’d like to keep Diane invisible and mysterious, but I think it turned out really well as she played such a pivotal role in the final episode. I truly think that final ep is one of the best things Lynch has done. I love the introduction of Carrie and how it was again left open ended.

That final time(line) opens up so many questions and possibilities, but I'm fine if that's where it ends. Kyle was great in all incarnations.

I wonder sometimes what season 2 would be like if Lynch could have done what he wanted.

If Lynch could do what he wanted, we might still not have an answer to the series' original mystery, not necessarily a bad thing...but we may not have gotten this series. Did you like INLAND EMPIRE? It's possibly my favorite of his films.

After watching Inland Empire, I looked up Rabbits and watched that.

I've watched it about three times on YouTube. Wish they'd release it officially in full. It's available on the pricey OOP "Lime Green" box, but even then is missing one episode.

The sitcom setting but in all the wrong places, the lightning and atmospheric music, it gave it all an unsettling vibe, it was great. What you can do in your own backyard.

You're in for a long strange ride, especially when you get to season 3. Make sure you check out the prequel film Fire Walk With Me, between seasons 2 and 3.
