Orson Welles was a movie prodigy and pioneer...and probably never wrote a run-on sentence complaining about someone else's lack of talent in his entire existence!

PreachCalebWhile that's a fair point... story can only take something so far though. since movies are a visual medium I think it's more of a determining factor on what stands out vs what does not. plus, some subjects are more interesting then others to. so it's a combination of things. because I think for the most part movies boils down to the following key areas... -Subject Matter (this is always important even though I realize what's good will vary from person-to-person) -Director (this is a strong factor but it's not always a factor simply because movies made by name directors only are released here and there) -Cast (while one does not always need names in movies, in general it's a safer bet if someone has a name than a no-name) (I think there was one other thing, but I can't recall it at the moment. but maybe visual style etc) so while a solid story can help, without other areas clicking, it can end up ultimately forgettable (i.e. Citizen Kane). p.s. like I have mentioned in the past... it's not really about doing something new but taking a idea that's already been done, then do it well. I can't fault you for saying that as it basically makes sense. but it's just a word people use for saying a movie gets more credit than they think it should etc (which is another way of wording what you just said, just a bit better way of wording it since it's not directly saying others are wrong even though you could word it like you did ).

Overrated as a director-no. Oversized as a director? Yes!
But I think he was in no way overrated as a creative personality--it's not like he ONLY directed so it's kind of difficult to fit him in a category (or a warehouse of categories).
He had some great quotes too:
There are only two emotions in a plane: boredom and terror. Orson Welles
I started at the top and worked my way down. Orson Welles
A writer needs a pen, an artist needs a brush, but a filmmaker needs an army. Orson Welles
My doctor told me to stop having intimate dinners for four. Unless there are three other people. Orson Welles
The enemy of art is the absence of limitations. Orson Welles
A good artist should be isolated. If he isn't isolated, something is wrong. Orson Welles
and
The director is the most overrated artist in the world. He is the only artist who, with no talent whatsoever, can be a success for 50 years without his lack of talent ever being discovered. Orson Welles
