I think that footballers are big kids and kids love adoration and showing off on social media. That said, not sure why a footballers contract couldn't restrict him from it. There will always be wankers and the internet allows for anonymous wankery. (just look at the politics board here). Social media is just a reflection of society and it's always better to know what a society really thinks behind the veneer of civility.

Isn’t that letting the racists win? anyway we’re not talking about yuge numbers. You’re always going to get the odd numptie. Twitter etc. Maybe need to be quicker in banning them.

I would have thought a lot of clubs and players' sponsorship deals these days would include clauses about the club or player maintaining a certain level of social media profile?
