You know those family movies that were about an animal? In those movies there is always some villain or villains trying to steal the animal. Whether it's for the circus, or a past owner, or to do tests on it. For some movies I always thought it was unnecessary and just cliche.

Yeah Finding Forrester, the Gus Van Sant film had this irritating subplot with F. Murray Abraham as this villainous teacher or something. The movie would have been much better off without that.

Lol, no that's an example of a movie where there is no villain and an example of how there doesn't need to be a villain especially in these family movies.

I stopped liking the movie once the villain plot started. I also can't stand those fucking talking dogs and they are only in the movie because of the villain.

well I don't think he was completely unnecessary because him being there led to the machine getting shut down and all the ghosts being released. at least I don't feel like he changed the direction of the movie like a lot of villains that get thrown in there do.

Well it was the first that came to my mind. I'll admit that I have seen most Hayao Miyazaki movies, and few others, but I have yet to see the rest.

I have seen Mary and the Witch's Flower, from Studio Ponoc, which seem to be a competitor/successor (not sure exactly) though.
