I think a gyro should be considered a sandwich.

Good question. Sure why not? It is meat between two pieces of bread. Ah, but its not 2 pieces of bread. Its one piece with a split down the middle. Technically that's what changes it.
I'm perfectly fine considering it what it is... a hot dog. But the debate rages on!
True, true. But there are times when the ratio of hot dogs to rolls don't even out and one is forced to use regular sandwich bread to act as the bun. But Ouch there are two games there as well one can simply use one slice of bread making it not a sandwich but simply a wiener wrapped in a single slice of bread. Then there is the two slice of bread method making it a "sandwich" although not a very balanced or organized sandwich. My final answer on the Hot Dog is that it is not a sandwich as you don't have to use the bread or roll with it.

My final answer on the Hot Dog is that it is not a sandwich as (2) you don't have to use the bread or roll with it. 1) Glad you caught that yourself and 2) That's right, isn't it? A Hot Dog is still a Hot Dog even if you don't have bread AT ALL. You can simply put a cooked Hot Dog on a plate and eat it by cutting it apart with a fork and its STILL a Hot Dog or Frankfurter. So in this case it's the meat that decides what it is, not the bread!
Whereas with cold cuts and cheese they would just be cold cuts and cheese without bread, they only become a sandwich once you put them on bread, even if open faced. But with a Hot Dog You don't need bread for it to still be a Hot Dog!
We've cracked it, you and I! A Hot Dog is NOT a sandwich!

klandersen now that the hotdog dilemma has been solved .. does it work the same way with a hamburger … which can be eaten with or without the bun/roll/bread ? I do realize that hamburgers are not officially even in this "discussion" but, what the heck ?

Good question. Sure why not? It is meat between two pieces of bread. klandersen Technically , a hotdog is meat inside a roll / bun not "bread". That's funny because my wife and I call it "Sandwich time" whenever one asks the other for anal sex. Putting my meat between her buns. I don't think you're allowed to say something like that in this forum.

If an ice cream sandwich is a sandwich then is an Oreo a sandwich? Yes an Oreo is a Sandwich Cookie. Why is it a "sandwich cookie" instead of a cookie sandwich?

That's faulty logic. A hotdog is a kind of sausage that can be eaten alone or with a sliced roll (or "hotdog bun") into which it is placed. If a hotdog is eaten alone, it is not a sandwich. If the hotdog is eaten in the sliced roll ("hotdog bun"), then the dish is collectively a sandwich. So whether a "hotdog" is a sandwich depends on which version of hotdog you mean.
A hamburger is a meat patty served between slices of a bun. This is a kind of sandwich.
If the patty is eaten without a bun, then the patty is a hamburger patty, but it is not a sandwich.
Another definition of hamburger (aka "hamburger meat") is ground beef, without a bun. You can use this kind of hamburger to top a pizza or cook with spaghetti sauce.

Watched a video where people were served several food items and had to say whether they were sandwiches or not, and got a right answer if their choice was the same as the majority poll. I got em all right as far as majority goes so I’m obviously correct. Ice Cream Sandwich - Yes Burrito - No A piece of buttered toast in between two more pieces of toast - yes Bread Bowl - no Gyro - no Double down Chicken sandwich from KFC - yes Lunchables - no Majority?? What country? What does the majority say "football" is? If a piece of buttered toast in between two or more pieces of toast is a sandwich, then a three-layer chocolate birthday cake is also a sandwich.

Most likely America, more specifically California.

BATouttaheck The bread doesn't have to be sliced, folks. True, but how many people take a full loaf of bread, cut (or separate it somehow) approx. in the middle and stuff something into it? Excluding Dagwood from the Blondie comic-strip.

Yes an Oreo is a Sandwich Cookie. Why is it a "sandwich cookie" instead of a cookie sandwich? I think a cookie sandwich would be a cookie or cookies inside something else that was the roll or bread slices/chunks. A sandwich cookie has some kind of inside stuffed between two cookies. Also I was reminded of a jingle for Nabisco's "Nutter Butter" that part of was "Have another Nutter Butter peanut butter sandwich cookie. by Nabisco"
