They just announced the first two cast members for this movie.
Donald Glover is going to be voicing Simba.
James Earl Jones is returning to once again play Mufasa.
I'm pleasantly surprised by the latter.

James Earl Jones' voice is way too iconic to be replaced.

I hope it lives up to the original.

Knowing that Jones is back, I now have a little faith in the movie.

I hear everybody saying, "Oh, whats the point of making a live action Lion King? The only thing at would be live action would be the scenery. All the animals would be CGI. It's pretty much animated all over again."
My response? My response is that that won't necessarily be what happens. They could use real lions for the movie. That would be really cool.

I'm thrilled they got James Earl Jones again. You know, a lot of people don't realize Darth Vader and Mufasa are the same voice!

Not sure if I'm really on board for a remake of this, but James Earl Jones voicing Mufasa once again was the right way to go.

I wonder why they didn't just do that for all the cast to be honest.

I wonder why they didn't just do that for all the cast to be honest. I think James Earl Jones and Jeremy Iron gave the most memorable voice performances in the '94 film. The rest of the cast were fine but don't stand out as much. Anyway, I suppose they'll want to distinguish this new version from the animated one so as to enable it to stand on its own two feet.

Since there are no humans in the film (unless they change the story I guess), I don't see why they don't just rip the voice audio from the original, and use it for the character voices.

Well, I'm hoping they won't opt for a line-by-line, scene-by-scene remake of the original. I'd rather an adaptation of the 1994 film than a virtual clone of it a la the 1998 the shot-by-shot remake of Hitchcock's Psycho.

A similarity in the way the new Beauty and the Beast appears be whilst having original things is what I want.
I definitely want all the same songs from the original but not the same audio.

I wonder why they didn't just do that for all the cast to be honest. Well, they can't exactly get all of the cast back (Jonathan Taylor Thomas grew up, Madge Sinclair is no longer alive), but they can go for the major players. If they can get Jeremy Irons to reprise his role, that would be pretty nice. Hard to imagine other voices for some of these characters, unless they can get a good sound alike. Definitely having James Earl Jones is a big deal. You just can't replace that deep voice with anyone. I'm thinking this film will be quite a hit when its released. Jungle Book did a very nice $900 mil worldwide.

Well not all but they could have got Matthew Broderick as Simba.
I wouldn't be against them getting back Jeremy Irons, Rowan Atkinson and the actors who played Timon and Pumba though.

I do have high hopes for the live-action version, but it'll never have the same feeling as being a kid and watching it on the big screen for the first time. Though, we know it'll kill in theaters. James Earl Jones reprising his role was like a breath of fresh air. I almost contemplated not seeing it in the cinema, and was going to wait until it was available via Netflix, but now I think I will go on opening weekend. I just hope they don't butcher it like they're doing with the Jumanji remake. Talk about pissing on the grave of Robin Williams...

So they've quite a few people for this.
Simba - Donald Glover
Mufasa - James Earl Jones
Pumbaa - Seth Rogen
Timon - Billy Eichner
Rafiki - John Kani
Sarabi - Alfre Woodward
Zazu - John Oliver

The only problem with Jones is you can hear his age in his voice these days (if that makes sense).
