Pretty standard home invasion story but wrapped up in a novel and interesting premise. Most stories like this put the house hours away from help or contrive some other reason you can't just call the cops. Switching it so that there effectively are no cops is a clever way to do this kind of story, and I appreciated that. It also played well into the stereotypes of the happy suburb with tensions simmering under the surface, the bored rich kids picking on a poor guy, racial tensions, etc. Overall good film.
8/10

5/10 - Had potential, but like the OP, I didn't like the 2nd half, nor the ending.

4/10. It’s a wasted opportunity as often described. But there’s a couple of things I did like. Namely the guy who played the purge leader and Lena Headey as the mom.

7/10, very entertaining home invasion movie peppered with black comedy. Later entries of this franchise haven't really done it for me.

Script writing 101: If you come up with an ideology and want to convey it through a story, don’t expose all the ideas and angles during the 1st few minutes only to use the themes as an allegory during the last few minutes. If you do that, people will realize that all they need to watch is that and skip the rest. THE PURGE made me want to do the same thing other people want to do when they have lunch with their in-laws: Skip most of it. There’s no real plot coming out of its great premise. It’s a home invasion movie so generic and repetitive that it feels like I’m watching the same scene over and over. Part of the attempt at social commentary is to display how very specific groups of people would act in a situation like this. Therefore, all the characters are archetypes (including the cute suburban family that supports the use of guns) instead of real characters. And the actors don’t have much to do. 3/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog.
