I know what you're thinking. Didn't they already make a movie based on this? Yes, but partly. X2 was more like Return to Weapon from Ultimate X-Men than GLMK and it completely left the religious aspect. So a adaptation that captured the themes of that story would be different enough.
Of course there needs to major changes:
-Replace William Stryker with Grayson Creed as the leader of The Purifiers.
-Mystique be the one he captures because of mommy issues.
-Have Nightcrawler take Cyclops place as the guy who debates with Creed.
-Storm takes Kitty's role.
See where this is going? Creed would be a foil for Kurt. Both sons of Mystique and highly religious.
End it off with Mystique being the one to shot Creed when he tries to kill Storm, except it's in the head(to mirror her killing Trask). And like Xavier she tries to leave with Magneto and Nightcrawler tries to talk her out of it like it like Scott did. However, the difference is that doesn't work and she leaves. Which echoes Hanks' theory about time being immutable.
