Consider this a companion thread to the one that asks, "On a scale of 1 to 10" where do you place religion?
This thread asks what you consider number one whatever that is for you. Never mind #2, #3 ... You may only select one choice.
In order to help you decide consider a scenario where for example you can get a large amount of money, but it means doing something not considered moral when you are certain you would not get caught. If you would take the money then money might be your 'supreme' concern rather than a 'supreme' being.
If you believe Trump is good president then police or military power might be most important to you. Please be honest if that is so.
For the purpose of this thread please assume that 'truth' and 'science' are generally highly valued, 'science' meaning only those things that are beyond doubt to people without special apparatus. If you have 'faith' in 'science' requiring equipment you don't have, please be honest about that faith. There is no special need to be ashamed of it.
The order typical for most people has long been 1 God 2 Family 3 Country. That is they would not assist a family member to do something immoral, but might assist a family member escape a government they consider unjust.

Family. Many other major concerns of people (money, global warming) lead back to worries about how those matters will affect their families.

Is this perhaps because your family has made generally approved choices? Would it still be your choice if they did not? Is there anything they could do to lose your approval?

It doesn't sound like you really mean "approval". It sounds more like you mean simply caring about them. And the answer is that I just don't know. I'm lucky in that my feelings for them have never been put to such a severe test.

Perhaps I wasn't clear. I'm asking for the one thing that other things cannot challenge. If you pick police power that means nothing can challenge decisions by the police.

I'm having trouble clicking on "A God" and religion combined. They are absolutely 2 different things.

There is a lot more to religion than a strong belief in God. Look at the other choices in that list, do they have the same baggage? Why is that?

Look at the other choices in that list, do they have the same baggage? Why is that? Yet the number one definition is about belief and worship. It's almost as though you're ashamed of religion and want to disassociate yourself from it. I'm sure the OP meant no disrespect as I'm quite sure he's a devout Christian, though he might not admit that publicly. He might be similarly reluctant to classify his views as religious.

I don't see any disrespect by the OP, I just see a difference, a significant difference in those things. And I don't understand why the two things are so linked. Why would you think I want to disassociate or be ashamed of religion because I value God, then family, then religion in the grand scheme of things? I don't put money ahead of any of those, do you think that means I'm ashamed of money and want to disassociate with it?

Mainly because a large portion of society links the many definitions of religion into one big pile. If I'm making a list of what comes first, I'm not going to place some institutionalized set of beliefs ahead of my family. I will not place God behind my family. Are you still scratching your head?

Ah, I see. Heaven forbid that someone might associate you with the unwashed masses of those other religions. It could be that the First Commandment encourages an elitism, or, perhaps, it's more like the army where it's easier to get soldiers to shoot if they dehumanize the enemy. I hope that with you it's more like the first.
