HM: Girl, Interrupted, Galaxy Quest, Toy Story 2, The Blair Witch Project
I am not much of a fan of Election, Bringing Out the Dead or Being John Malkovich. I know those three are very well liked.

I voted for... 1)The Green Mile - 10/10 2)Payback - 8/10 (NOTE: while i gave both versions of the movie a 8/10 i would give the overall edge to the Directors Cut which is this one... www.imdb.com/title/tt0958860/ ; that's the most altered i have seen from a regular version to a directors cut as pretty much all other movies just add a bit of footage where as that movie it has a completely different end area of the movie and some other alterations) 3)American Beauty - 6-6.5/10 4)The Matrix - 6/10 (i prefer The Matrix Reloaded (6-6.5/10) over this one) p.s. those also are the only movies on that list i have seen that i gave a Thumbs Up. i have seen about 14 of those movies. My favorite movies of 1999... 1.The Green Mile - 10/10 2.The Thomas Crown Affair - 8.5-9/10 3.The Ninth Gate - 8/10 (Polanski's best movie) 4.Payback HM: American Beauty 6-6.5/10)

I am not much of a fan of most of those movies tbh but I don't particularly dislike most of them either. The Iron Giant badly needs a rewatch. I do like Liberty Heights though.

I want to take a minute to sell Ravenous to people who haven't seen it. It's a very dark comedy/horror movie about cannibals in the 19th century that has two very good central performances from Guy Pearce and Robert Carlyle. It's frightening, disturbing and funny at the same time and features one of the best scores of the 1990s.

saw 12/20 this year.
my picks The Sixth Sense <-- saw in theater NOT spoiled ! Still enjoyed it after knowing the secrets. MUST be seen the first time not knowing. The Green Mile Office Space <recommended as great and it was funny.
why nots: REALLY wanted to like The Straight Story but it did not work for me. May be better on a re-watch. I REALLY like Richard Farnsworth. Man on the Moon. Gave it a second chance recently. Still like Latka. Andy Kaufman not so much. Magnolia. Great concept but I skipped over the Cruise rants after a while. Hoffman's character was one of the only likable people in the whole bunch. Crying Cruise, nope.

moviemouthIt looks like your likely on a similar rating system i used to use before i changed to my current one in Sep 2014 as it used to be 7's and higher as positive and 6's and lower as negative but that is too limited as there were too many movies bunched onto the general 7/10 score and some of those were clearly quite a bit weaker than others which is where my new system is much better as it shifts many of those back to a 6/10 area. that's why i switched to allow 6's and higher as positive as 6's are pretty much movies i mildly enjoy but will still re-watch them here and there. so basically your rating for those two movies on my scale now would be a 5/10 given what you say as typically a 5/10 is one of those movies that's alright enough for a viewing but has no re-watch appeal. basically one of those middle-of-the-road/average types of movies in my overall enjoyment of it. to nit pick on the details of a 5/10... 4.5-5/10(i.e. weak average) is borderline wasting my time where as more solid 5/10's (i.e. 5/10 or 5-5.5/10) i would say are decent enough to have seen once but ultimately have no re-watch value. basically... if i were you i would switch to a better rating scale. like 5/10 is middle-of-the-road/average and then scales up and down fairly evenly from there. this way movies you mildly like can go on 6/10's and then ones that start to stand out, give it a 7/10, and so on. For example, I actually think the first half of The Ninth Gate is very good but at some point in the second half it just becomes very silly and doesn't work for me. What started as a great mystery horror movie just kind of phones in the last 25 minutes or so. The film is well made overall and Johnny Depp is very good in it though. I fist saw it at the cinema when I was 16 and found it very mediocre (5.5/10) but it faired much better on rewatch about 5 years ago and now I rate it 6.5/10. The Thomas Crowne Affair I also saw at the cinema in 1998 and I just found it very dull, but I was quite young at the time. I think it would proabaly fare better on rewatch but I don't really have any urge to re-watch it.

There are 10 ra[t]ings total and 5 are thumbs down and 5 are thumbs up." so basically... comment A says a 6/10 is Thumbs Down where as comment B says a 6/10 is a Thumbs Up. so which is it for you? ; like without the details but in a basic sense of 1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/10, where is your cut off point between Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down? even if you want to go down the route of say a 6.5/10 is your minimum for a thumbs up... when you score it on IMDb where does that land? (a 6/10 or a 7/10?) ; this will tell me all i need to know about your general rating system in a basic sense. because if it was a 7 you might as well say 6.5-7/10(weak 7) or if it's a 6 you might as well say 6-6.5/10(strong six). p.s. comment B is inline with myself where as comment A is not. i stumble into movies from time to time that can get noticeably damaged from a fair portion of a movie like say the first 20-30min of a movie is fairly dull but then picks up or say a movie is fairly stable in my interest for basically all of the movie but takes a fairly decent hit in the last 30-45min... in cases like those, it just depends on how much my all around enjoyment of it was in whether ill re-watch it or not and i score accordingly as like i mentioned before anything ill re-watch cannot score below a 6/10 and anything i won't re-watch cannot score above a 5/10 in a basic sense. that comment above was directed at the bold text. but the comment here is about your re-watch about 5 years ago and now rate it a 6.5/10... so i assume you like it and it's re-watch worthy for you now? p.s. my favorite Johnny Depp movies... 1)Blow(9/10) 2)The Ninth Gate(8/10) 3)The Lone Ranger(7/10) 4)Donnie Brasco(6.5-7/10) I understand. but ill just say this... if i get a feeling that a movie i did not care for in the past might improve to a Thumbs Up on a re-watch ill usually give it a shot to see if it returns to a positive score. hence, worth re-watching from time to time. but it's somewhat rare ill re-watch a movie i score a 5/10 (or less) but it has happened for me (and once in a while paid off). but i guess it just depends on how bad it was initially for you as say you thought it was below average from your memory of it ages ago and even if it improved a bit, but still only got a 5/10, then in the end it was probably not worth your time to re-watch. but if it's like a 5/10 and you think it might improve, then personally i would re-watch it as it could return to a positive opinion of the movie when you get a feeling a movie might improve for you on a re-watch that you currently give a Thumbs Down. p.s. i think what carries that movie for it is the general feel/tone of it along with the solid chemistry between Brosnan/Russo. basically in terms of movie with a solid romance angle that's pretty much as good as it gets in my book. a pretty unique movie if you ask me (the 1968 movie can't touch the 1999 remake). the user sariz (i think that's her name on these forums) is also a big fan of this movie like i am. in fact, i think she praises it even more than i do (because i think it's a bit higher up her all time favorites type of list than it is for me) and it's within my Top 29 movies.
