Pick your 4 favorites from my top 20 of 1999

That's the thing... if they are strong in memory or not i feel something you enjoy to a higher degree would be a movie you would want to see again within a reasonable time frame (say once every few years or so, or at least once every 5 years at the longest).

as a general guideline for me... anything i score a 7 or higher will see AT LEAST one re-watch every few years-ish tops and sometimes a bit more often. but ill say this... say i just seen a movie today for the first time and it ended up getting into the 7/10 (or higher) range of score (hell, probably even 6-6.5/10's to for that matter) ill likely re-watch it within the next 6 months to 1 year tops to see if it holds up then from that point on forward ill likely scale back to seeing it once every two or three years or so unless of course it drops off etc.



I wished i thought the same but i feel i have largely exhausted seeing the quality movies (i.e. movies that i would consider amongst my favorites) from the past, excluding movies being released into the future as those still turn up here and there.

but if i had your mindset, like where it's fairly easy to find strong movies, then i suspect my re-watching of movies would be noticeably less than it is currently as since i have been keeping track, which is Dec 27th 2011 to date, i have re-watched more movies than movies i have seen for the first time (especially 2015 and 2016 which is nearly 7 out of every 10 movies (that figure was rounded up a bit) i have seen in those years is a re-watch. but, like i mentioned, i do that to keep movies as a whole interesting for me as re-watching movies i know that are solid simply deliver me more overall enjoyment vs if i just stuck to movies i have not seen before as going with movies i have not seen before, while i find something decent here and there, i tend to see a bunch of mostly forgettable movies etc.



I watch some foreign movies but not too many and while i do see an occasional pre-1960's movie i, like it seems you already know, largely avoid given their overall style etc is just too different from more modern standards in general which makes them harder to get into/enjoy for me.

but as far as the foreign movies thing... they can be solid as there are some non-English language movies amongst my favorite movies but there just don't seem to be too many that stand out from what i have seen as i think certain regions of the world are just much less likely to output a movie of any real worth so i pretty much avoid certain regions of the world etc.



I think it depends...

i only agree if your saying watching a movie too many times WITHIN a short period of time as truly good movies for us will stand the test of time if they are of any real worth. so you can see a movie 10 or 20 or 30 or more times and if it's truly good it will hold up.

so as long as i don't re-watch a movie a bunch of times within say a year or so chances are re-watching a movie too many times will not be a factor for me. but even if i do see a movie a bit too much within a short period of time ill simply back off on it and let a fair amount of time pass before seeing it again etc.

but one example of a movie i re-watched definitely more than usual and within a fairly short period of time, especially my first four viewings, would be Drive (2011) and it did take a hit for me...

1st-4th viewings (Sep 16th 2011(opening day in the theaters) through Jan 2012) = 9/10+
5th viewing (Sep 16th 2013) = 7.5-8/10
6th viewing (Sep 16th 2014) = 7.5-8/10
7th viewing (Sep 16th 2015) = 7/10 (ill likely wait til sometime in late 2018 before seeing it again to see how it fairs for me. but currently ill give the slight edge to Only God Forgives (2013)(7/10) which is from the same director.)

that's my most re-watched movie released this decade as it's kinda a rare exception though as i don't normally see a movie THAT often anymore as i typically won't re-watch a movie more than once a year-ish MAX once i have seen it twice. i don't feel seeing a movie once a year or so is TOO much even though i would have to say seeing a movie four times within 4 months or so(like Drive was as shown above) is a bit too much, but i could not get enough of it ; i kinda knew that movie was going to stand out from the clips etc i have seen before it was in the theaters which is why i seen it opening day at the first showing in my area. i fairly rarely get to the theaters in general as i have not been to the theaters since 2011 (i went twice in 2011).

but anyways, as you can see... Drive never really took a solid hit compared to it's peak for me til my 7th viewing. but still, it's within my Top 199 movies.



Damn, how many total movies have you seen? ; i am @ 2,100+ and i would say it was about the year 2003 when the general volume of movies i have seen started to increase quite a bit. at your rate you would pass me in less than 5 years time basically.

there is no way i could see 500 movies i have not seen before in a year at this point as if i did that i would be seeing plenty of forgettable movies.

also, 350-400 movies a 8/10 or higher a year... that sounds VERY generous as your either easily pleased by movies to a higher degree or got a flawed rating system (no offense) as i think movies that are nothing special for you in the long term should never have a high score like that. that's why i feel my rating system is pretty well balanced at this point and not many movies score all that high for me simply because the vast majority of movies out there are nothing special and my ratings are inline with this.

p.s. also, when you say 500 movies a year, these are legitimate movies (i.e. generally speaking... say movies at least 1hr20min+ in length) and not shorts etc, correct?




so passable but in the end forgettable.

given what you say there... your 6's are basically like my 5/10's (at least the bulk of them off the top of my head) as they are typically decent enough for me to not have wasted my time but in the end i consider them a thumbs down because i won't see them again as they are not good enough to re-watch which means they are ultimately forgettable. hence, thumbs down.
