Sometimes it makes sense. It depends on the context.

You are just arguing for the sake of arguing. He is out of bullets, so it doesn't matter if a gun is easier to dodge than a bullet because he has no bullets left. You have been given plenty of good answers so far. It's more common than I first thought it was... He asked a question and I was answering it based on logic. An empty gun is going to be more plausible to dodge and avoid than a bullet. Not looking to argue with anyone. What "plenty of good answers" am I getting? This is moreso just to start a conversation than to really be seeking answers to something that never really works and doesn't make sense to do. Wouldn't it be better to hold onto it for: A) Another time you get more ammo and B) To use it as a club to pistol whip the enemy instead if they get that close? People often do stuff it doesn't make sense to do, especially if they are in immediate threat of death. I am able to believe it.

Well of course it does because it is in the script for it to work for him. For an enemy to throw his empty gun at Wick? Wick will dodge it or it will miss. And it's in the script not to work in the situation sometimes. I see no difference. It doesn't work for the villain in Casino Royale and in fact makes it worse for him, but it certainly works for James Bond. So it is only illogical to throw your empty gun at someone if it doesn't help? That seems to be what you are saying. I see no difference, because the person throwing the gun doesn't know if it is going to help them or not. Granted in the case of John Wick that is a huge heavy gun, but you didn't specify the gun size in your OP. Though you even pointed out that if it was the villain throwing the same gun, the screenplay would have John Wick dodge it.

That was funny. Actually a lot funnier than the movie "Airplane" or "Naked Gun". This clip is kinda long, but if you're a fan of Elvira, MOTD, it's funny. She throws her "gun" down @ the 2:43 mark. She's just a funny lady.

Great minds! Since I posted a gif of the shootout in another thread earlier on Politics board. Not only is the shootout funny but so is what follows. "Sgt Takeheraway. Sgt. Booker." "A little hunch back at the office." LOL One of the best TV shows of all time that was ahead of its time and ended before it's time.

I always tend to notice how they throw it. For instance, even a small pistol, thrown like a throwing axe would probably be enough to stun someone if it makes contact. Not far off from nailing someone with a small brick.
...But if it's someone 'throwing' a machine gun like you'd frustratingly hand someone a duffel bag, I don't buy it. Hopefully I'll never be in a situation when I have to throw an empty rifle at someone, but if I am, I hope I'll remember to hang on to it to use as a club.

What is even more amusing in films I find, with the old landline phones and people will scream into it are you there, are you there and keep tapping the receiver while doing it which is only going to cut the call off anyway. I thought you were going to mention throwing the phone at someone. Well, that's another thing that gets me. Someone is trapped in a garage with the killer getting closer and right outside the door that goes into the house. I'll be saying to them "There are all sorts of weapons in there. Grab things and use them!" Like flower pots can be thrown or use the tools on the wall etc. I hope I'm never in that situation but I hope I remember this if I am. Look around for stuff you can use and if it's small enough to throw, go for it. If you got nothing to lose it's better to go down fighting than to just give in and die.

One of the silliest throwing object scenes has to be from "Broken Arrow" (1996). I never knew a hammer has enough force to kill a person when making contact with their head from being thrown and to knock them completely off their feet.

There was a television episode I saw once (might have been the Saint starring Roger Moore or Return of the Saint starring Ian Ogilvy) in which Scottish soldiers were trained to throw the empty gun at the enemy and then rush in and take him out with that little skidoo knife they keep in one of their knee-high old man socks. It seemed like a silly tactic then and it still does. If your gun is empty and you don't have time to reload it, and you're not willing to surrender or turn tail, why not just save a couple of steps and rush in to club him with the empty gun?

I thought the same thing, but apparently I misremembered it. It was their helmets which were thrown. Then they draw pistols and fire. Afterwards Sizemore throws away his pistol in frustration (maybe because it's empty?).
I can't explain why they would throw helmets before drawing pistols. I suppose in the heat of the moment, you just act on instinct. And it took less time to throw the helmet than to draw the gun.

You did explain why.

Ha Ha! Yes, I am always amused when I see people doing what you described. And they just keep tap tap tapping the receiver. Anything to keep the action going I guess.

The metallic content of the gun interferes with a radio wave from the local radio station, which causes a disruption that a driver hears 175 yards away, which causes him to change the station, which makes him ease on the gas pedal, which slows the driver behind him, who decides to get into the other lane, which causes a semi bearing down on that driver to blow his horn, which distracts someone mowing his lawn, and the person mowing his lawn then runs over a rock due to the distraction, and the rock hurtles into the air, borne by the wind, into the head of the person the guy throws a gun at, which kills the "sombitch" dead.
Simple Physics.

And of course the chick does it against the weakest henchman of the enemy! LOL She could have done that with a used tampon she just pulled out.

Well lets hope you are not put into that situation Warren for the sake of the poor killer, who will get death by flowerpot. An embarrassing way to go. Then come the corny lines. Well, I sure planted him. I didn't know he was such a pothead! You deserve that for making me break my favorite flower pot! You were human. Now you are fertilizer. Time for your dirt nap.

Ahhh...but he still throws the pistol at the end there.
