Not a comic book fan - but apparently it's a masterpiece.
Might be one of those movies that's a 'Must See' even if you're not a fan of the particular genre.

Last super hero movie I watched was the Heath Ledger Joker movie. I'll see this one too - - love Joaquin Phoenix.

I've never seen 1 Avenger movie, 1 X-Men movie or 99% of Super Hero Movies. One of the few I did see and enjoy was Spider-Man II - the one with Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. And saw most of Batman vs. Superman - don't really get what all the hate was about - but I'm not a fan of the genre so maybe why people were so upset is completely over my head. This movie's trailer looked pretty good though.

Some guys sat around and said “Hey, let’s make up a whole new Joker origin story based on nothing.” Phoenix will probably be good in it, he’s good in just about everything, but otherwise it seems kind of pointless to me.

Most reviews are quite strong, a few are negative, like anything, but mostly for political or ideological reasons. They think the message is confused, or muddled, or shallow, just not aligned with their own beliefs.
But for the most part the response is that it's a pretty good subversive drama with a great performance applied to a familiar piece of intellectual property. I don't know if that's pointless or not, but if it's a good film I'll be pleased.

Part of the appeal and mystique about the Joker (the character, not the movie) is that he’s been given no official origin story. There’s been different versions given in different Batman comics and also in the Tim Burton film but nothing that anyone can say “this is his true origin.” He’s a cross between Keyser Soze and an actual demon or something in between.

For me, part of what made The Dark Knight's version of the Joker so compelling was the fact that he had no backstory, no name, no....anything really. He even tells two different versions of how he got his signature scars, both of which are equally disturbing but the second versions leaves you wondering which one, if either, are true. It's part of what makes him an absolute villain that presents such a difficult challenge to Batman. He's an idea, basically a completely bastardized version of what Batman represents. I love Phoenix and if there's any actor out there who could ably pick up the mantle of the character (whereas Jared Leto couldn't have fallen flatter on his stupid face) it's him. But I fear that giving Joker this backstory will serve to undermine what makes him such a great character in the first place. That said, give props to DC a bit here. They realize that everything they're doing has been unbridled dogshit the last few years, so I give them credit for a wise course correction. Even if the movie is passably entertaining, that's a great step for them.

Like a couple of you have already said, I'm no big fan of comic book movies and superhero stuff, but I am a fan of great actors.
That's why The Dark Knight is my favorite movie of that type, and also why I'm really looking forward to seeing this. I never in my wildest dreams would think anyone can top Heath Ledger playing the Joker, but if there's one guy out there now that might, it's Joaquin Phoenix.
Can't wait to see this.

The really weird thing about this film is that it comes from the director of the Hangover films, Due Date and the Starkey & Hutch remake (Todd Phillips)! Absolutely no CV for making the type of film this seems to have been created as, i.e. an arty / sophisticated "directors" piece.
It's almost exactly like that Green Book film coming out of absolutely nowhere from the director of Dumb and Dumber, Something About Mary, Shallow Hal, etc (Peter Farrelly).
It makes no sense! I'm figuring they sat at a table one night having a bet that they could have a hit serious film simply by following a formula - one guy goes for the simple race relations old / younger driving Miss Daisy style effort and the other goes for the gritty King of Comedy / Taxi Driver styling. Boom! All of a sudden the two National Lampooner's are sitting on Oscar gold! I'm sure it's an in joke that they're both laughing away at...

How to win a best picture Oscar - make a film about racism, being gay, mentally challenged, or a gay racist who is mentally challenged. Boom. Win.
