www.kusc.org/radio/programs/spend-labor-day-weekend-with-kusc/Labor Day feels like the end of summer (even when the heat doesn’t seem to be letting up), so all through the long weekend we’re bringing you cool music to soak up the last days of the season. Rich Capparela will ease you into the weekend on Friday starting at 3PM with KUSC at the Beach. Alan Chapman is throwing a “Labor Weekend Dance Party” on Modern Times Saturday at 10PM. And all through the weekend and into Monday, you’ll hear amazing classical music that has stood the test of time. Join us for a musical tribute to Labor Day on KUSC!

Tuned in at 3.06am Pacific Time and this was playing : Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra in Bb by Tomaso Albinoni. Quite soothing. I'm not usually a Classical listener. But it was a pleasant change. Then the DJ spoke and told me a little info about the piece. Next up was Eternal Longing Op:33 by Vitezslav Novak, which I am listening to now - a little gentler, slowly sweeping, climbing and falling in turn with little crescendos.
It seems you can listen in your car or in your kitchen via the radio if you are in Southern California, but their website is also for listeners in farther away places. The DJ has a clear voice and is quite alert for the hour of night in California. It's most definitely not like one of those through-the-night shows where the DJ forgets to turn off his mic and you can hear snoring noises all through the track he has just cued up. Here is the DJ again. Ah, Novak was Czech, I am being informed. Now he's got a flute concerto for us.
The show playing now is called California Classical All Night.

I listened over the weekend to a mix disc I put together of Tomaso Albinoni, it had both string concertos and double oboe concertos. Great stuff. Yeah, I listen to KUSC most of the time on the radio but the signal can get dodgy sometimes, if I'm anywhere near a computer the online signal never varies, it's always great. KUSC is affiliated with the University of Southern California and has been the greatest source for classical music in Southern California for decades. If you've ever seen the movie Barfly about poet, novelist and drunkard Charles Bukowski you've heard some KUSC in it, it provided him with all his classical music inspiration. Glad you've discovered it, hopefully you've bookmarked the spot and listen again sometime you're in the mood. Cheers.

Yes, I've bookmarked the station, DrKrippen . As you say, the website clarity is superb. The film 'Barfly' is available to me and I've set it for a viewing. Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway (wow!) Look forward to it. And cheers for the link nutsberryfarm 🏜 .

DrKrippen nutsberryfarm 🏜 Barfly was a very enjoyable watch. I liked the seediness of some of the characters, the dive bars etc. Seen only a couple of Rourke films and after watching Barfly I sought out and watched Johnny Handsome and F.T.W. (aka Last Ride) and I have Body Heat lined up and ready to watch. He kind of mellowed a bit after meeting Wanda but Fay Dunaway was superb in the role. Tully was pretty cool too. When the film started I thought I was hearing "The Changeling" by The Doors (it's played during the end credits as well ) Same funky rocky California riff, but not the Doors. That scene posted above is at the end of the film and is my favourite part, I think. The way he suddenly prolongs the pronunciation of some words is funny and endearing. You'd think after a few minutes it might get on your nerves, but not so! "All-r i-i-i-ght!" "To all my frieeends" " Heeeey!" "Pour yourself a driiink" "Now give everybody a new rooouund!" "Let me get you a hamburger." -- " Awww. I want a steak, soaked in whiiisskeeeyy!" "Wait, I can't back down nooow" Good stuuuff.

That is where the real treasures are. Try a short, small one, his first, Post Office to ease into them. Some good stuff made it into the film. I liked this quote in particular. And of course the one liners about not liking people. Something like... "I don't like people" "Do you hate them?" "No, I just feel better when they're not around." "I don't like cops" "Do you hate them?" "No, I just feel better when they're not around." And the music at the opening, love it, fit the scene and set the atmosphere perfectly. It was Booker T. & The MG's - Hip Hug-Her (1967)

Two good quotes you posted there. The first made me actually question what the hell was going on in my life while I was watching it. True. The second (and third) was a brilliant passage and says so much in so few words. There was another, more quirky, line I really liked too. When Eddie and him are about to fight, Eddie, confident of beating him, tells him, "I'd hate to be you if I was me." (!!!) I confess to not having read any Bukowski, but it's never too late. Thanks for the Post Office heads-up. And cheers for the track! EDIT - tag : DrKrippen
