In that first Super Bowl they were just unlucky. Belichick's defensive game plan is certainly in the Hall of Fame for a reason - but even with that, the Bills were a wide right field goal away from winning it all. The next three were just vs superior teams - remember this was during a period of long sustained NFC dominance. The AFC lost every Super Bowl from the 1984 season until the Broncos finally broke the pattern in the 97 season.
TheGoodMan could tell you about it better than I could - if he wants to relive the horror, that is.

They got progressively worse in each SB appearance but aside from a trick of fate against NY, they had to face three more stacked NFL teams. Giants were tough but had Nortwood been given at least another 10 yards closer they probably would of taken that one. They just sorta gassed out or flat out quit against the Redskins and Cowboys.
Dallas was basically a rebuilt from scratch team with a New York Yankees greatest hits style line up and they were blown out in that first meeting. Poor Jim Kelly got his leg broken in that game so it was pretty much all over for Buffalo in the 1993 game. Also, the final score should of been a lot more lopsided. If not for the referees allowing Frank Reich's illegal forward pass for a TD when he had already crossed the line of scrimmage and Leon Lett not showboating before having his TD swatted down the score would of been 59-10 instead of 52-17, which would of made it the most lopsided SB in history.
To wrap things up, Buffalo was a good team in a weak AFC where the best teams were offense happy but got swatted down by the more balanced NFC which usually prided themselves on defense. Buffalo had some good players, but they had the rotten luck of playing 4 teams that were good on all sides of the ball.

If you ever get an opportunity watch ESPN's 30 for 30 - 'Four Falls of Buffalo' - it's terrific.
I do appreciate their ability to laugh at themselves:

Now, why did the Vikings lose all 4 from 1970-1977?

Now, why did the Vikings lose all 4 from 1970-1977? interesting because they had arguably a better defense as well.

If they could have played any of those Super Bowls in February in the cold of Buffalo, it wouldn't have been a problem.
The first one is the one that they really blew, especially considering that the Giants were using a backup at QB, albeit a pretty good one in Hostetler. They probably should have beat the Redskins also.

When you look at what the other teams did in all four, they played nearly flawless games. Very few turnovers, very few penalties, very few sacks. The Bills thought they had XXV won before they walked on the field, they should have switched up their game plan in the first minutes. The Giants had only two defensive linemen. Thurman Thomas could have run all day on that. Then the Giants would have had to get out of that and Kelly picks them apart. The Redskins game turned on Thurmanβs lost helmet. That game would have been 14-0 had he been on the field. The Cowfuckers were too good.

Levy didn't adjust quickly &/or well enough to absorb that Giants' D. Wasn't there a penalty to move the kick further back? Reminds me of blaming Buckner for game 6, when the game was already tied when that happened.
Yeah, that was an NFC stretch of superiority, though the Bills apparently did have a very strong regular season record over the NFC those years.
Being up close (Buffalo has forever been Toronto's American TV portal*), I remember how little change & adaptations the Bills went through, even after winning 1, 2, & 3 times. It was insanity, trying the same things over & over & over again expecting different results.

Yeah, that was an NFC stretch of superiority, though the Bills apparently did have a very strong regular season record over the NFC those years. Tough to blame Levy for not scrapping the K Gun in the first few minutes. It had completely befuddled the Raiders in the AFC Championship. The Bills were not known for simply running up the middle but it was there. And that first Giants drive of the third quarter was devastating. The Bills offense might as well been back in Buffalo. Wore out the defense.
