Vanishing Point (1971) Bullitt Blazing Magnum Gone in 60 Seconds (1974) Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry
The best car chases were all made in the late 1960's and 1970's. Real cars with V8's, real stunt drivers, no CGI.

Mad Max: Fury Road M:I - Fallout The Dark Knight Akira (motorcycle chase) Raiders of the Lost Ark And while not a 'car chase' I also want to mention 'The Wrong Trousers, which has one of the best chase scenes I've ever seen.
Wrong Trousers? Yes, yes, yes! That is not only one of the best chase scenes on film it is THE best chase scene ever on film. It tops them all. And that is fact and not opinion. For the genius of it and the time and trouble it took to make it. It is the most clever one of all time. I have never seen anything else that comes close to the epicness of it.

The Bullitt (1968) car chase scene seems to get praised but it's pretty average overall. but then again the movie itself is pretty average and it's hard to say something stands out in a average movie in general. either way, it's not as good as many claim it is. but in general I imagine it boils down to largely franchise movies that have the better car chase scenes as if you put those aside not much would be left off the top of my head. but at this point in time... nothing really stand out from the pack off the top of my head as movies that happen to stand out in general that do have some car chase scenes, the car chase scenes by themselves are nothing that great but the overall movie just happens to stand out. Yeah super over hyped
I suspect it's more because Steve McQueen is tied to the car chase scene then anything else.
