He wasn't very bright.
Think the NFL game was just light years above what he was accustomed to at Texas and he couldn't make the jump.
If memory serves - didn't he get in trouble a bit too? He always kind of looked a bit out of shape too.
Think he went to the pros and with that 'potential' you speak of - thought he could have just coasted and not put the work in - i.e. see Johnny Football.

Quite the philosophical question. Why do any of us succeed where others fail, or vice versa? Ability? Talent? Luck?

I read somewhere that he had one of the worst scores on the Wonderlic test they give rookies. Something like 6 out of 50. He was alright for a couple years, but he got hurt and the Titans stuck with Kerry Collins. Destroyed his confidence.

Young wasn’t all that great in the NFL but in all fairness Jeff Fisher was his coach during his formative years.

From what I remember he was an athlete that never really learned to play QB. That works in college (especially when he was as big as he was) but not so much in the NFL. Plus he seemed to rely on his athleticism too much and didnt seem to want to learn how to play any other way.
He had personal issues as well. I think it was depression and I wanna say he went missing for a short period of time.
So maybe he just didnt have the mentality to make it.

Didn't seem very bright. Lacked discipline hence his portly build. That resulted in his decreased ability to make plays with his legs which was what he had excelled at previously. The main thing that ended his career in the NFL was his inability to become a solid passer. Even dual threat QB's have to be able to pass consistently and competently.

Wasn't he part of the "dream team" with Michael Vick in Philly?

Unlike so many folks here, and in general, I can admit when I've been wrong. And I've maybe never been more wrong about anything sports-related as I was about Vince Young.
After watching him in college, and especially that Rose Bowl, I thought he was gonna be the next Joe Montana. I really did......

Thought he was a sure thing.
