As far as the kind that are depicted in Hollywood movies are concerned... Then, no, I don't they have ever existed...
But...
There have been many real... for a lack of a better word here: "Mutants", as in genetic mutations, not 'X-Men'... throughout history, which may have been close to the creatures we know think of, and they may have been the original sources that inspired our modern day stories.
