The Lost Boys 10. Return of the Living Dead I don't consider The Terminator, Aliens or Predator horror movies. They would all be in my Top 10 if I did. Here is how I go about genre listings. I have to consider horror one of the main 2 genres of the movie in order to consider something real horror. I consider Aliens, The Terminator and Predator as action/sci-fi. Alien (1979) on the other hand is sci-fi/horror.

So what are the main 2 genres of Jaws? Thriller/adventure Ehhh. Personally, when I think of thrillers, I think more stuff like Hitchcock and Fincher. Skinny dipping teens, POV shots of the killer, giant animal monsters, jump scares, authority figures who wont close the deadly location...textbook horror tropes. Would also be pretty weird if statistically one of the top three scariest movies ever made (next to Psycho and The Exorcist) wasn't even part of the scare genre. The other three are more dubious, but I see Predator and The Terminator as riffs on the slasher genre. They're practically Friday the 13th with an alien and Halloween with a robot. Terminator kinda ditches that after the first 45 minutes which is why I didn't really count it. Predator is kind of the reverse: it starts as an action war movie and becomes a sci-fi horror. Take Billy's death. Instead of seeing his last stand against the Predator as per an action movie, he dies screaming offscreen as per a horror.

I agree with what normally would classify as a thriller, but there are exceptions. Maybe the problem is that I don't think Jaws is scary and it doesn't feel much like a horror movie even with the horror tropes, outside of a handful of scenes. The entire second half to me feels more like a thrilling Moby Dick type adventure than a horror movie. Jaws is a tricky genre placing for me. I understand your arguments completely, which is why I still consider Jaws partly horror. I never implied that Predator and The Terminator don't have horror aspects to them, which is why I would list horror as third. I don't have a problem with people listing them as horror. The Killing of a Scared Deer on the other hand is one of the scariest movies I have ever seen and it is about a teenager who basically puts a curse on a family.

It doesn't really scare me either, but neither does The Exorcist. I still have to recognize they scared the absolute piss out of most audiences. I see your point on the second half. But is there a non-horror movie with a score as menacing? That's surprising about Sacred Deer. Like The Lobster and The Favourite, I saw it as a black comedy. I'm fact, it's the only one of the three that really had me laughing.

I agree about the Jaws theme btw. Here is the difference. If I were to watch Jaws without any knowledge about the movie, I would not have guessed it was intended to be scary on a whole. The Exorcist on the other hand is clearly meant to terrify as a whole. I do think The Exorcist is often very creepy, which is basically the equivalent as scary for me.
