Im Binge-watching Downton abbey andthinking what a thankless task it is to be in a scene with Maggie Smith. Even incadescent actors like Shirley MacLaine have trouble holding their edge of the conversation. Smith never steps out of character or unbalances the action, but she can do things with her eyebrows that other actors need a cast of thousands to express.
Any other inveterate scene stealers that give their colleagues bad dreams the night before a shoot?

Skippy the Wire Haired Terrier... AKA Asta (The Thin Man)... Mr Smith (The Awful Truth)... George (Bringing Up Baby), always stole the scene, regardless of the main stars...

Asta, I totally agree, reminds me of the dog (that I sadly forgot the name of) on the Frasier TV-series.
In a more human form, love him or hate him, Jimmy Durante in The Man who Came to Dinner, he steals every scene he's in, even from personalities like Bette Davis and Monty Wooley.
Joyce Grenfell with her Lovely Ducks scene in Hitchcocks Stage Fright.

Jonesy in Alien. That moggy stole every scene he was in.

John Goodman was the most consistently proficient actor throughout every season of Roseanne, and since then, he's become one of those character actors whom I always enjoy seeing turn up in a film. No matter how mediocre the film (and there have been several of those), I always think, "Well, at least it had John Goodman in it, so it had one good quality."

Ex-boxer Dick Miller has long been considered a scene stealer by Roger Corman and his associates, an idea that lent itself well to the title of the recent documentary 'That Guy Dick Miller' (2014), the joke being that you may not know his name but he'll still command your attention. Miller's popped up as several characters named Walter Paisley over the years, a reference to a rare lead role he played in Corman's art school satire 'A Bucket Of Blood' (1959) which ruthlessly sent up beatnik culture. He's a great guy, born on Christmas Day, 88 years old now but still making movies.

Anthony Hopkins owns every scene he's in. If I were an actor in a scene with him I'd feel totally intimidated.

Most character actors are scene stealers with seemingly no effort at all. Whenever the likes of Eve Arden or Thelma Ritter are on screen, the stars mean nothing to me.

I can understand Jimmy Cagney's frustration, for better or worse. Sakall--whom I'll always see as "Felix" from Christmas in Connecticut despite his arguably more important role in Casablanca--is one of those actors whom I would watch reading the phonebook, as the cliche goes!

Another notorious scene stealer -- Strother Martin.
Jimmy Stewart had already worked with him in a couple of previous films before they made FOOLS PARADE in 1971, so Stewart was onto his tricks.
In one climactic scene, Strother came on the set carrying a pad, a pencil, and a ball of string.
Jimmy took director Andrew McLaglen aside and told him:
" 'Ol Strother over there can have that pad, and he can keep the pencil -- but there ain't no way in hell that he's gonna play with that ball of string in this scene!"
