Would you call The Beach Boys a good band?

No I wouldn’t. I would call them a great band.

Great Band with songs that have stood the test of time!
People still go to beach, surf, and drive fast cars... Right?

When they stuck with surfing, girls, and cars, they were great. The more sophisticated stuff doesn't work for me. I admire the creativity in, say, Good Vibrations but I don't like it.

As far as I know, no band is great forever. I would say that they had a great period from the early to mid 60's to the very late 60's. I can't think of another band that can consistently equal songs like Don't Worry Baby, California Girls and Good Vibrations.

I like 9 of their songs, mostly the surf stuff. Never quite got the Pet Sounds obsequiousness, though Sloop John B is excellent.
1. Good Vibrations 2. I Get Around 3. Sloop John B 4. Help Me, Rhonda 5. Feel Flows 6. Fun, Fun, Fun 7. Surfin' U.S.A. 8. California Girls 9. Surfin' Safari

I don't usually care for tribute bands but these guys are impressive.

One of my favorites (see my current sig). Their early surf/fun/car/girls songs are cool, but I particularly like their more ambitious work from Pet Sounds through to Holland (1973) and Love You (1976) has a fun quirky charm. Pickings do get pretty slim after that. Love all the stuff I've heard from the lost/aborted SMiLE album also. Way to many great songs to do a list a favorites, but if I had to pick one it would be ‘Til I Die from Surf’s Up (1971).

Call them average. I would. A to F scale they would rank a C for me.

"God Only Knows" is a masterpiece. From a non American viewpoint I would argue that like The Doors, they are very much of a time and place that doesn't quite travel as well as other "great" bands.

Fantastic band, Good Vibrations is one of my favorite songs in general. If you haven't listened to it yet, I really really recommend everyone to listen to 'The Smile Sessions'. It was released in 2012 and presents an idea of what the 'Smile' album would've been like had it been finished back in the 60s. It contains a lot of unreleased material with and many of the existing songs like Good Vibrations & Heroes and Villains have been edited and it even has completely 'new' songs. For me, it's probably my favorite archival release I've ever heard, I think I even prefer it to Pet Sounds.

I don't trust anyone who doesn't like the Beach Boys. Not saying you have to be a big fan or anything, but someone who hates the Beach Boys? Ehhh, I'll go find someone else to talk to, thanks.
