I've been re-visiting some Matthew Broderick movies, e.g., "Max Dugan Returns" and "Wargames" and "Biloxi Blues" and, wow, what an insufferable smart ass he is as well as just doing whatever he wants to do, everybody else can go to hell. (like changing Ally Sheedy's grades, even when she asks him not to or pushing Christoper Walken's buttons at the worst possible moments, etc.) He must have some deep seated anger issues, as he really takes some chances with the stuff he pulls. And he does with this kind of what they used to call "flat affect". His characters are very passive aggressive.I guess that's it. Passive aggressive. I don't know if I am projecting here or not. I don't think so, though, because passive aggressive has never been my style.
Anyway, I did like Matthew in "Election" and I did not hate him in the earlier movies. I just thought he could be super obnoxious. He was not bad looking, but his cutesy-ness kind of killed his good looks.

Ferris Bueller could be considered an entitled and self-serving sociopath. I liked Broderick nonetheless throughout the 80's. He was just good a playing a wiseass. Have you seen Ladyhawke Mr. D? Watched recently with Rutger. Similar cheeky character, but he is also more humbling in this. Ferris Bueller, yes! That's exactly what I am talking about with Broderick. FB is the epitome of smart ass and self-serving. I just can't embrace the guy. I have never seen Ladyhawke, Toasted Cheese. Maybe I will have to see if it's up on youtube.
