I know it actually got a mixed reaction by critics back in 1980. At least Leonard Maltin was wise to give it a 4 star rating. Same with Roger Ebert.

I actually didn't like it as a kid, it depressed me quite a bit. It's my absolute favorite of the entire series now though.

Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review:
The Empire Strikes Back - 4 out of 4 stars
"Smashing sequel to Star Wars manages to top the original in its embellishment of leading characters' personalities, truly dazzling special effects (which earned a special Oscar) and nonstop spirit of adventure and excitement."

Star Wars - 3.5 out of 4
The Empire Strikes Back - 4 out of 4
Return of the Jedi - 3.5 out of 4
The Phantom Menace - 3 out of 4
Attack of the Clones - 2 out of 4
Revenge of the Sith - 3 out of 4

The cliffhanger pissed me off in 1980. Yeah, I seem to recall, or at least it seems to me, that "cliffhangers" were not a very common thing, back then... Especially in Movies, and at the end of a season for TV Shows... It was not good business to do that, and people hated waiting... I remember how painful it was to wait for THREE MONTHS to find out what happened to Captain Picard as "LOCUTUS of Borg" on Star Trek: The Next Generation... Now EVERYTHING seems to end on a cliffhanger. And for the record... I never disliked the movie... It's has always been my favorite of all of them. But, I will agree, it ended on a sad note... and I didn't want to wait, to know what happened to Han.

If so, I'm interested to hear why. The latest George Lucash garbage where the asshole couldn't fucking leave it alone? Fuck that. Throw that in the garbage. The original one I saw in the theatre? Love it.

I watched the OT so much, I no longer casually throw on ESB because of Degobah's slowness & its boggy aesthetics. I need to make time for the movie now.

Well on the ratings on IMDB, 1,4% have given it a 1 out of 10. So there are people who dislike the movie.
