Cutting Class (1989). That is one nutty slasher comedy, and so is the killer.

Interesting, the picture does have that dark, washed out look like "Demented", but it's not the film. I'll throw out two clues.
1/ It's a film adaptation of a novel. 2/ The main character is an author.

Going only by the picture and your hints, I imediately think of Stephen King and from there on I just try my luck on the one with Johnny Depp as a writer in Secret Window (2004).

Wow, I had completely forgotten about this one. Nice to see you bring it back. Hopefully it might catch on a little, as I sure do enjoy these kind of guess the movie games. Anyway, I have no idea which film the above image are taken from, so I will just blindly try my "luck" on a film that I have been meaning to see for a while now: Clownhouse (1989)?

Damn, the more I look at that picture, the more I have this feeling I have seen it, several times, but I just cannot seem to remember from which one. I got a feeling this might be from a Stephen King movie adaptions.

Pretty much what I was thinking. not Clownhouse. Clue 1; A video nasty. And lives up to it.

Hm, a video nasty eh? I remember I stumbled upon that infamous UK list, was it 70 or 80 titles? I guess looking it up, is kind of cheating, but I know I have probably seen a good few of those films, but I guess I might just have to await for maybe another clue or see if somebody else might shed a light upon which film we are looking for.

If you look closely at the glass tank in the picture. There’s something on top which gets a memorable (larger than life) scene in the movie.

Alright, I admit it. I had to look up at some of the Video Nasty list, and of course, not going through every single one of them. But at least a few of those I knew already, that I have seen or own in my movie collection. And well, I first thought of either of the Boogey Man films, but then I did notice Xtro (1982), which I actually have through an uncut danish DVD version of, and while not remembering the part with huge soldier toy, I sure have not forggoten the lovely James Bond babe Maryam d'Abo.

masterofallgoons Damn, my bad of course, I put too much into my own reply, but, hey, that is how it goes sometimes, and credit where credit is due. Xtro is really a weird sci-fi/horror film, has a bit of that early Cronenberg feel to it, at times Yeah, some of those Video Nasty titles look rather innocent now, but I guess back then, it did not take too much to get on that list of nasties. Hell, I guess many of the directors were kind "glad", as it did gather their film even more recognition than if they not were on that list at all.

It wasn't the video nasty part that tipped me off, actually. I just saw this movie for the first time a couple of weeks ago. It was the hint about the toy soldier that did it for me. I agree that it seems somewhat innocent now, but I'd guess that the full nudity and sex scenes are what earned it a spot more than any of the violence. Although some of the effects are still quite stomach-turning.
