But sadly, those will continue to happen as if they ain't stopped by now, I just don't see them stopping for the foreseeable future. mentioned in that video about science (and I did a quick search to find a article on it... inters.org/reflection-on-John-Paul-II-science-religion )... "science can purify religion from error and superstition, religion can purify science from idolotry and false absolutes. each can draw the other into a wider world, a world in which both can flourish" - St. John Paul II that part he talked about Confession (basically from between 45min12sec and 48min00sec)... I am pretty sure that's more specifically true for mortal sin(serious sin) as venial sins(mild sins) are not absolutely required to be confessed although it's recommended (plus, I suspect we commit more sins than we think we do and the average person is not likely to know every little sin they did as they simply can't see it, so they can't really confess EVERYTHING. also, you got some people being too scrupulous where they are worried about every little thing and are too hard on themselves like God won't forgive them etc which one does not want to go this far either). because you can't hold back any sins you know are mortal sins otherwise the confession is definitely invalid, but it's not the case with venial sin. although obviously, this does not give you a license to commit a bunch of venial sins as all sin we commit, even once God forgives you through Confession, still requires temporal punishment due for those sins which is either paid back through suffering or sacrifice or charitable acts or through prayer etc. but other than that he's basically right especially given his example of murder as that's obviously serious sin territory and they would end up in hell if they fail to repent. but say a person stole a candy bar from a store... this would be venial sin territory and not absolutely required to confess as you won't end up in hell for something like that. although obviously you need to avoid stealing that candy bar since all sin we commit must be paid back to God even once we are forgiven (like I basically mentioned above). but listening a bit more he kind of talks about that stuff a little bit after the section in the video I mentioned. I noticed he brought up indulgences to (48min00sec to 53min30sec), but did not really say that there are basically two kinds (even though he said enough to get his point across about we can't buy our way into Heaven through indulgences etc)... -Partial (some of your punishment for your sins is removed) -Plenary (it's basically like hitting the spiritual jackpot in that ALL of your punishment due to your sins is removed as if you die after truly receiving this, it's immediate entrance into Heaven from what I understand as long as you don't commit any more sin between receiving the Plenary indulgence and the time you die. but the catch to receiving a Plenary indulgence is... to sum it up, you can't have ANY attachment to any sins, even little ones, otherwise you don't get a plenary indulgence and it shifts back to a partial and, from what I have read, it appears very few people will truly get a Plenary when attempting to get one due to one of the requirement of not being attached to any sin, even small ones, as that's quite difficult for us to do.) so I thought I would comment a little on those couple of things talked about in the video. from 53min33sec to 59min20sec he talks about those who claim the Catholic church hates gay people and it not being true etc in that it's wrong to hate gay people just because their gay etc, which is true. but I must add, which they did not really say much about, official teachings of the Catholic church do say that sex between two of the same sex is serious sin that one should strive to avoid. I realize that won't be easy for those types of people but it's a cross for one to bear etc as those who are gay you can either follow their own sinful desires/passions or reject them and follow God because God says it's wrong. so I guess it's a tricky balance of the Catholic church treating gay people with respect etc but at the same time not downplaying it's serious sin and needs to be avoided. the last thing from basically 59min20sec on forward talks about those claiming a Priest being celibate turns someone into a pedohile etc not being true.
