Who is this Charles Walters that name I've seen on so many old MGM technicolor musicals? When Arthur Freed started his new unit at MGM to make more adventourous and advanced musicals, away from MacDonald/Eddy Musicals, Freed went to Broadway to find new interesting talents, and MGM new musicals sparkled, with talent's like Vincente Minnelli and Stanley Donen, But also Charles Walters ( a dancer and cheographer), and he has a few hit's under his cap!
Labeled as a great woman's director. In 1936 he met John Darrow a Broadway Actor and later agent, and they lived together until Darrow passed away 1980.
Now over to his movies:
High Society 1956, in swedish A Lovely Story, I have that soundtrack on vinyl, and I play it often, the movie is so so
Easter Parade 1948, in swedish A Dance With You, lovely Fred and Judy
Please Don't Eat the Daisies 1960, in swedish Hand on Heart, Doris Day and David Niven, sparkles
Walk Don't Run 1966 in swedish Hurry Slowly, Boy, Walters only movie outside MGM, and Cary Grant's Thank You and Farewell Performance, Well I liked it!
Summer Stock 1950 in swedish Curtain up, Judy drives a tractor, Gene dances on sandpaper, Judy does a showstopper version of Get Happy that I love!
The Unsinkable Molly Brown 1964, in swedish The Wild Daughter of Colorado, Debbie Reynolds finest hour (??!!??)
Lili 1953, Leslie Caron and Mel Ferrer, what a charmer, Mel Ferrer and Laslie Caron even had a hit record, Mel's only hit parade song??
The Barkleys of Broadway 1948, in swedish We Dance Again, Fred and Ginger back in each others arms, And I wish it was a better movie with a more interesting script.
Good News 1947, in swedish Long Live Love, A scene with the Harry James band is memorable, but on the other hand made Allyson and Lawford teen idols.
The Tender Trap 1955, in swedish Lovely Bachelorhood, The only movie I have actually disliked Debbie Reynolds and her eternal nagging, Frank's singing of title tune is tops though ( but strangely set in a desert).
Billy Rose's Jumbo 1962 in swedish Sun and Spring and in Love, Doris Day Musical that shoud have bee a hit, but wasn't, Day never made a musical again, sadly.
The Glass Slipper 1955, in swedish Castle Ball, charming but unremarkable triffle with Leslie Caron and stiff Michael Wilding, in a Cinderella variation.
Torch Song 1953 in swedish My Yearning is You, Joan Crawford,s great return to MGM, now only remebered for a really awfull black faced sequence
Dangerous When Wet 1953, in swedish We Swim Together, actually one of Esther Williams best acting roles at MGM, and one wishes that at least one song was memorable.
The Belle of New York 1952, in swedish Salute the Bride, This must be one of Fred Astaire's most unknown movies, never seen it, have you?
Ask Any Girl 1959, in swedish Every Girl Knows That!, Shirley MacLaine's acting impressed the jury at Berlin Film Festival so much she won the Silver Bear award!
Did Charles Walters win any awards himself? Yes Cannes 1953 he won the International Award for Lili. He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, At 6402 Hollywood Blvd to be more precise. (yes I looked it up)
