With Ad Astra getting favorable reviews, it marks the 8th year in a row where a big budget original sci-fi movie has been a critical success (RT). I couldn't find a decent 2011 one.
2012 Prometheus 73% 2013 Gravity 96% 2014 Interstellar 72% 2015 The Martian 91% 2016 Arrival 94% 2017 Life 68% 2018 First Man 87% 2019 Ad Astra 83%
How would you rank these?

Good choice but im leaning more towards asking which of the bigger budget mainstream sci fis was best. Ex machina only had $15M budget

first man is historical drama - so that could be replaced with annihilation in 2018.
blade runner 2046 is probably a more likely option than life for 2017.
And I'd have edge of tomorrow over interstellar for 2014.
Whatever - it's been a top decade for big budget SF movies.

There is only two Sci-fi movies that stands out from 2012-2019... 1)Ex Machina (2015) - 7-7.5/10 2)Edge of Tomorrow (2014) - 7/10
Honorable Mentions... 3)Annihilation (2018) - 6-6.5/10 (same director as Ex Machina) 4)Terminator Genisys (2015) ----------------------------------------------------------- But strictly the movies the OP listed... 1)Arrival (2016) - 6/10 (a mild Thumbs Up) 2)The Martian (2015) -)First Man (2018) 4)Gravity (2013) 5)Life (2017) - 5/10 (Thumbs Down) -)Prometheus (2012) 7)Interstellar (2014) - 2/10 (boring. could not finish) I have not seen Ad Astra, yet. p.s. it's possible my 2nd-4th could interchange but ill go with Gravity in 4th for now with the other two tied.

First Man is historical drama rather than science fiction. The events depicted actually happened.

First Man is historical drama rather than science fiction. The events depicted actually happened. Unless you think Kubrick helped NASA fake it...

Though not a big budget, my favorite is Predestination w/Ethan Hawke Mine, too. Easily. Some others that I liked, regardless of budget: Another Earth / Mike Cahill (2011) Gravity / Alfonso Cuarón (2013) The Congress / Ari Folman (2013) Upstream Color / Shane Carruth (2013) Mad Max: Fury Road / George Miller (2015) Arrival / Denis Villeneuve (2016) Sorry To Bother You / Boots Riley (2018) Most of the big budget titles mentioned had some good points but I never ranked them high enough to qualify for any "best" list.

Gravity and Blade Runner 2049 come to mind. Agreed!
Also Prometheus, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Martian, Interstellar, and Rogue One.

as far as the big budget sci fi films go, its gotta be Blade Runner 2049 imo. That film had so much going for it and was dazzling. Really looking forward to what Villeneuve has up his sleeves with DUNE (word is WB is giving him full control so there will be very little studio interference)

Interstellar (2014) is one of the top movies of the decade, and one of my favourite sci-fi in general.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) is not far behind. (though its sequels were a disappointment)
Inception (2010) also brilliant.
As for those you listed, I would rank them:
Interstellar Arrival Ad Astra Prometheus Life Gravity First Man The Martian
