SCIENTISTS believe they have found evidence to support the existence of a biblical state that historians had initially scoffed at.
Edom, according to the Book of Genesis, was the state that existed "before kings ruled the children of Israel". In the face of scepticism from historians, scientists and archaeologists working in southern Jordan and Israel have analysed ancient industrial and mining sites. They have found signs to suggest that mines in various parts of the region made coinciding progress in their smelting techniques, pointing to the idea that all of the mines were functioning under one single authority – the State of Edom.
Edom, according to the Bible, fought the Israelites and became major rivals for influence and power in the area.
Edomites were one of several states in the region for whom trade was vital due to the scarcity of arable land.
It is also said that sea routes traded as far away as India, with ships leaving from the port of Ezion-Geber.
Edom’s location on the southern highlands left it with only a small strip of land that received sufficient rain for farming.
Edomites were portrayed in the Bible as the antagonists, with Hadad the Edomite fighting King Solomon having been brought up in exile by Egyptian Pharaohs.
The Edomites also cheered Babylonians as King Nebuchadnezzar took the children of Jerusalem and the rest of Israel into slavery.
The famous ancient of city of Petra in Jordan lies in what used to be Edom, and in modern times is lauded as one of the seven wonders of the world.
The old mining sites, or slag heaps, suggest that the population at the time was using and then improving on Egyptian technology, and the uniform nature of all of the mines points to a state spanning 60 miles between mines in Timna and Faynan.
An online paper 'Plos One' reads: "The striking synchronous agreement between the technology in Timna and Faynan, evident as early as the 11th Century BCE suggests that an over-arching political body existed in the region already at this time."
Edomites are descended from Esau, the son of patriarch Isaac whose other son Jacob was the father of the Jewish race.
