a white dude.
Copycat (1995)
I don't want to post anything with spoilers, so I can't show the best scenes, of course.

There is movie called Set It Off which has four female back leads and it was a critical and a commercial hit. It was New Line Cinema biggest success of 1996. Also a pretty good movie. Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter were pretty good as the leads in that movie and I'm not entirely sure if Aliens would've been a bigger hit if it had other lead other than Sigourney Weaver.

Set it Off is great; I wish I'd already answered my op here with that before you mentioned it. That's exactly a movie I would include in my thesis (I wanted the thread title to read "...hits if the lead(s) had been" but the "(s)" didn't fit). Set it Off and Copycat have extremely comparable critical reception: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Set_It_Off_(film)#Critical_responseen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copycat_(film)#Receptionand Box Office: www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=copycat.htmwww.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=setitoff.htmbut I wouldn't call either a huge hit, not by a long shot. I can only imagine what kind of Box Office a movie like Set it Off would've made if it had a cast closer to that of The Expendables. www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=expendables.htm

I couldn't imagine Copycat without its 2 female leads. They work in well with the movie's plot and theme. It never even crossed my mind that the leads should have been male and that it would have been better if the gender roles were reversed. The 2 killers were psychos with aberrant sexual issues regarding women. I am not so sure it would have worked so well, had it been 2 female psycho's with aberrant male sexual issues and 2 male leads, one with agoraphobia because he was attacked in a rest room by one of the psycho women. Even if it was a psycho dude that attacked him, the male dynamic is different to that of a female. Weaver's fear was projected more feasibly onto her.

dianachristensenThat movie (i.e. The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996)(7/10 ; within my Top 150 movies)) already is solid. in fact, I think it's one of the best action movies with a female lead, possibly THE best.

I feel like the last five years or so have proved that the notion that people wont go see a movie not starring a white man is a smokescreen for Hollywood's own racism and sexism.
