I thought he was kind of a bland Superman, but maybe that's just me. He was still miles better than Henry Cavill's "emo" Superman though and he looks far more how like Clark Kent/Superman is supposed to like. He has also seriously buffed up since Superman Returns came out. Both Superman iterations of Routh and Cavill are great. This criticism of Cavill being emo comes from ignorance on the source material stories he was being adapted from. Everyone expects him to be like Christopher Reeves, smiling and warm but that's not everything Superman is.

I'm not, nor have I ever been an expert on the Superman lore and I don't expect Superman to always be like Christopher Reeves, but I certainly know enough about Superman to know that Superman is not supposed to be a poor man's version of Batman. Superman is the polar opposite of Batman, always has been and always will be. And to be truthfully honest, neither iterations of Brandon Routh and Henry Cavill's versions of Superman are great considering neither versions were good OR well-received by the general public because neither movies were good and they didn't live up to the Superman brand name.

The general public have an ill-informed preconception of what Superman should be like because of the ground breaking Superman '78 which they can't let go. Superman is a complex character with inner battles of his own much like Batman and MoS/BvS gave credit this human side of his. It is a realistic reaction to how Superman would be treated if he were a living entity in todays society, met with hostility and cautiousness. Not with flocks of people amazed in uniform wonder screaming is it a bird, is it a plane, no its superman everytime he flies over Metropolis.

Bruce Timm's Animated Series & Justice League/Justice League Unlimited Superman >>> Any of the the live-action Supermans IMO.
