As some of you may know, I go to the cinema very often. Like each week twice or so. It’s one of my strongest hobbies. Due to work I have not been able to go to the cinema in 8 weeks and I am noticing that I am experiencing quite unpleasant feelings about it.
I mean I am mostly annoyed about all the movies I missed out in. But also I miss the pleasure of being in the cinema in the dark and letting a filmmaker take me on a journey around their world.
Anybody has a similar experience, that when their hobby is taken away (for one reason or another) they feel discomfort and almost anxiety?
God I can’t wait to be back in the theater....

If I don't get at least a few hours of alone time every week with a pair of headphones, I get the shakes.

Are cats a hobby?

If I don't get at least a few hours of alone time every week with a pair of headphones, I get the shakes. Yeah alone time is super important for me too. Especially since I am around people most of my awake time these days. I guess I get snappy more than shakey though without it. But cinema (in the theatre, at home it doesn’t work) really does wonders for me and my mental well being. I wonder when a hobby changes into an addiction...

Absolutely!! I have not had access to cats in 8 years now and I actually think my brain is negatively affected by it. I need to change my cat situation. Soon. How soon do you think you would go crazy without your kitties?

My hobby would probably just be watching movies. Very difficult to achieve but doable.

3 weeks would be the max. have you tried and tested your limits? Yeah, via vacations &/or work scheduling. Hobbies for me are escapism, & without that it scuks.

I have not really tried it, but if I could not re-watch some of my favorite movies (or TV shows) after a while it would likely start bothering me as something would be off (like it's not much of a issue for me not seeing movies I have not seen before (since I suspect I have largely exhausted seeing movies of any real worth from the past(although they still turn up here and there in the future)) but if I could not re-watch my favorites that would be a issue after a while). I am not sure how long I could go before it would start to noticeably bother me but my best guess would be a month or so MAX as I don't think a week or two would bother me all that much but I can't imagine going beyond around a month or so before it would noticeably bother me.
in fact, looking at basically 2012 to date, if I strictly look at movies seen on a month-to-month basis, the only months I have not seen at least ten movies a month would be... Sep 2013, Sep 2016, Aug/Sep/Nov 2017, Jan/Mar/Apr/May/June/Oct 2018, and soon to be Sep 2019. so only 12 out of the 93 total months (i.e. Jan 2012 through Sep 2019) I failed to see at least ten movies a month. also, only twice did I fail to re-watch even 1 movie in a single month which was Sep 2016 and Apr 2018.
hell, even currently... I am re-watching Dexter (2006-2013), which I started on Sep 6th 2019 (which is my 2nd viewing of it), and while I am enjoying it (it's holding up well as it's currently my #3 show ever behind my Top 2 spots (in no order) which are The Sopranos (1999-2007)/Breaking Bad (2008-2013)), I do find myself missing re-watching movies a bit. but had I not been re-watching that, things would have likely been noticeably worse. still, I did manage to see 2-3 movies since I started the re-watch of Dexter. I suspect ill be done re-watching Dexter in it's entirely within the next week or so (almost surely less than 2 weeks) as I am currently on S07E03 (I got 22 episodes left). my initial viewing was from Sep 1st 2016 through Oct 3rd 2016, so it took a little over a month on my initial viewing. I suspect ill be a little either way of that this time around. I still got 24 movies I plan on re-watching before this year is finished (I am sure ill re-watch some other random movies to) as I typically try to re-watch anything I score a 6-6.5/10 or higher at least once every few years or so tops as a general rule.
I voted for the 'a bit challenging but doable'. like I would not like it for sure, but I am not going to say it's impossible to do as it's not like I would lose my mind or anything. plus, as mentioned... alone time is key as I would definitely dislike not having at least some of that as while I don't think it's good for people to be completely alone for any length of time in general, as I think we all need to be around at least some people on a semi-regular basis etc, I think we all need some alone time or things get out of whack and we get cranky etc. but I guess going 2 months without watching ANY TV WHATSOEVER would definitely suck as if I could watch at least some level of TV, even if I could not watch some movies, that would make the 2 months a bit more bearable. but if you had to go cold-turkey without any TV or movies whatsoever for 2 full months, that would suck.

Yeah, I was thinking about that too. For some maybe porn / sex is a hobby and how long would they be able to go without it.

I suppose I could take up a replacement short-term hobby in the interim.

Impossible. Since I started to play guitar in 1996, the longest intermission has been one week and that was due to tendovaginitis.

I go to the cinema very often. Like each week twice or so. Are you serious? Twice a week? In 2019? Are you kidding me? With the severe lack of good movies being made these days, two times a year is much more sensible. But two times a week? If it were 2011 or something I'd kind of understand, but 2019? WTF? You must be one of those who rushes out to see whatever is currently being "hyped" up. How many thousands per year do you blindly hand over to Disney?
