"Cleft-chinned, steely-eyed and virile star of international cinema who rose from being "the ragman's son" to become a bona fide superstar, Kirk Douglas, also known as Issur Danielovitch Demsky, was born on December 9, 1916 in Amsterdam, New York." My favorite of his MANY films is said to also be his favorite. What a career he had ! Comments, essays, images are (as always) welcomed, encouraged and appreciated !

One of the few leading men from the Golden Age of Hollywood that was at home playing either the hero or the villain, and doing so convincingly.

A close second to his personal favorite (LONELY) is also PATHS OF GLORY.
And Kirk did make an engaging 'Doc Holliday' in OK CORRAL -- stealing the picture from Lancaster's upright and uptight 'Wyatt Earp.'

As great as he was, my all time favorite movie was his dual roles in "The Man From Snowy River"

The Burt and Kirk act.
(Eat your hearts out, Kelly & O'Connor -- this duo are really 'fit as a fiddle.')

Kirk's not really bad, Tele -- he's just drawn that way.

My favorites: Seven Days in May Cast a Giant Shadow Spartacus The Vikings Paths of Glory 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea definitely gets an "honorable mention"

Douglas picks..for roles champion (1949) paths of glory (1957) ace in the hole (1951) lonely are the brave (1962) seven days in may (1964) young man with a horn (1950) gunfight at the o.k. corral (1957) i walk alone (1947)
In western man without a star (1955), he starts out in overbearing, happy-go-lucky mode - even breaking into song at one point - but then shifts into a brooding man of the west. I prefer him that way.

I don't think anyone has mentioned "A Letter To Three Wives" (1949) yet. Kirk plays one of the nicest guys in movie history. A school teacher, married to and very much in love with Ann Southern and, very unusual for the times, had absolutely no objection to her being a career woman.
