Ovie scores 693, passing Yzerman for 9th all time. And now he's passed Messier.

Leafs blow 2 goal lead in the third to the Canes. Andersen has to leave early and Hutchinson plays poorly in relief.

Carolina beats Toronto having to use emergency goalie, 42yr old Marlies zamboni driver Dave Ayers.
The Leafs lost to their AHL zamboni driver in net. ftw

How about this Flyers team folks? Orange Crush 5 points out of 1st place in the Metropolitan. Carter Harts Splits - Kinda odd - Hart is abysmal on the road but steady as a rock at home. Been whispers swirling of playing two goalies come playoff time. I don't like that approach - just roll with the kid - would be great experience for him even if he were to fall flat on his face.
FLY OR DIE!

Time for my yearly NHL rant on how I'm disgusted with the point system.
i.e. 1 pt for an OT loss.
The parity is ridiculous - i.e. every team is pretty much the same - and it really doesn't matter until the final week or so of the regular season for a majority of teams to see if they makes the playoffs/what seed they will be.
Just check out the Metropolitan Division -
1. Caps 84 2. Flyers 81 3. Penguins 80 4. Islanders 78 5. Blue Jackets 76 6. Hurricanes 74 7. Rangers 74 8. Devils 61
So the 2nd place team is only 7 points up on the 7th place team - talk about parity (for that matter the 1st place team is only 10 pts up on 7th place team - i.e. next to last in the division)
And - they're jockeying with teams in the Atlantic Division as well in regards to the 2 Wildcard Spots.
Can any hardcore NHL fans here defend this point system?
Can we please just go back to 2 pts for a win - 0 for a loss - and 1 for a tie?

Other than Columbus who seemingly have benefitted a lot with 14 loser points, the other 6 teams are only 4 wins apart in the standings and 4 OTL apart.

Leafs headed to Cali this week for 3... if they can't close this playoff run, they truly don't deserve it.

Leafs headed to Cali this week for 3... if they can't close this playoff run, they truly don't deserve it. Melrose hates the Zamboni driver goalie story and keeps saying "What if the Leafs miss the playoffs by 2 points?" The game was tied after they took 2 shots, then they let in 3 goals and couldn't score, while shooting straight at the dude. Having a real 3rd goalie in there for Carolina, which is what he wants, would have done what then? Or did he want a defenseman to put on the gear? In other news, Stamkos out 6-8 weeks - core muscle surgery. You never hear about core muscle surgery much.

But I think that's exactly what they should have done - put another player in pads.
I mean - sometimes non-pitchers have to pitch in the MLB - what's next putting the waterboy out there to shoot free throws in the NBA or the towel boy to kick a game winning FG in the NFL?

They only dress 20 players and that would mean you've effectively lost 3, as the defenseman has to be in goal, and a player who never has played goalie is at a high injury risk. How many guys can all of a sudden be called on to do splits and spring up again with heavy equipment on? Are you going to train your least necessary guy to be a third goalie and then have him traded and then need to bring in somebody else? Are you going to have a big pool of guys who are sometimes goalies and always ready, while they never see game action in goal over their entire careers? Last guy pulled in was in 2018.

If the player pulled from another position lets in 10 goals he lets in 10 goals - and if that makes another line weaker - i.e. say another defenseman has to pull double duty - so be it.
Again - this was a great story - but - This is the equivalent of calling in the popcorn vendor from the stands to save a game for an MLB team.
Makes you wonder why the NHL is 4th most popular out of all 4 major sports - I mean - it's kind of a renegade odd wacky sport - they still allow fighting and you get a point for losing.
So it isn't really that shocking to me.

Popcorn vendors aren't highly trained equipped specialists at what they are called to do. Who knows who even fits into the equipment on the bench? Would be fun seeing a Marty St. Louis or a Brad Marchand have to put the stuff on and get out there.

The emergency goalie is always an actual goalie, he's not some random person they just throw equipment on. Ayres is good enough to be their practice goalie when needed. Personally I'd rather see teams have to play with no goalie. Happens when a goalie is pulled so it's already part of the game. As for a skater going into goal, the issue becomes how well does the equipment fit and if it doesn't, is the player's safety compromised?
