darksidebeadleI hope not as based on my impression of it I think it's got a reasonable chance for a 6/10 (a mild Thumbs Up) as if I give it less than a 5/10 ill be a bit surprised (as in I overestimated it) and "if" it hits a 6-6.5/10 or higher it will exceed my expectations and be my #1 super hero type of movie if you count it as one. if I give it anything under a 5/10 ill have definitely overestimated it and that usually don't happen for me in general even though it's possible it could happen as sometimes ill be surprised in a positive way (i.e. exceeds my expectations) and sometimes in a negative way(i.e. falls below my expectations) but usually I can gauge movies pretty close to how they ultimately turn out for me prior to seeing them especially given the majority of movies I have seen over the long term get a 5/10 (Thumbs Down(but usually okay enough for a one time viewing etc)) and that's typically where I expect most movies I see to land on about a 5/10, maybe a 6/10 at best. but there are not many movies I got into that I think have a reasonable chance of reaching a 7/10 or higher and I am not expecting Joker to hit 7/10 or higher status. for the record... only about 7% (about 160 movies or so tops) of everything I have seen managed to hit 'boring' status (i.e. 2/10). so playing the odds... it won't be THAT bad for me. but we shall see if your prediction is right in due time

I think the diversity of comments here interesting.
I am not put off slightly by the comparisons between Taxi Driver and King of Comedy. A lot of films borrow or respectfully ( or of course shamefully) ape other movies.
Is it a crime if every movie is NOT totally original or Not slightly derivative of others. High on fuck¡πg impossible I would hazard.
Personally, I loved King of Comedy despite always disliking Jerry Lewis movies and his real personality,.....I think he was playing himself.......and enjoyed and respected Taxi Driver , although I have no particular urge to see taxi driver again. So anything similar and nodful to those is not unwelcome........and I think Jaquoin is a great actor.
B U T
I may not rush to see this movie as I am not that bonkers about the other criticisms and observations (accurate or not) about the level of violence and similar.....and study of madness in what is a comic character that has been revisionised plenty already.....this does not lure me personally.
I am unapologetically still a bit of a comic book fan, and the deviation from the source material ( slightly akin to that recent Fantastic Four Movie) does not inspire me.
Of course I will attempt it at some point on DVD or something, but I would be more interested if the movie was its own thing without a recognised fictional character being twisted more sharply. .......

I'm familiar with "King of Comedy" and "Taxi Driver"
I get the comparison, but...
Just saw it last night. This one's a rare bird and not (to me) outwardly impersonating the two I listed above.
Some of the stuff dealing with mental illness is a bit heavy-handed. The violence is appropriate and doesn't go for shock (I like slashers, but violence for violence's sake would have ruined "Joker").
It was a refreshingly adult character-study. Not a lot of brawling, but a lot of action going on upstairs. Some of it reminded me of "Sling Blade" more than anything else...or maybe "Rain Man." There was a 'nobody's home' vibe that Phoenix absolutely nails in this. Best movie I've seen in a while FWIW

No exaggeration, one of the finest films I have ever seen.
As a screenwriter this is what you aim for. This kind of in depth, deeply personal character study that define masterpieces. From the very first frame to the last, one is memorized by everything Joker is doing, thinking, and, well, laughing at. Joaquin Phoenix, I mean what can I say. One of the very, very best acting performances I have ever seen. Just amazing, as overused as that word is, amazing. It has been many years since I've been so utterly blown away by a film.
A rare 10/10 from me.

darksidebeadleNo, pretty much. well... I did see Collateral (2004) (on Oct 2nd 2019), as it was a 5/10 (Thumbs Down), but decided to give it another chance since it's been nearly 5 years (Nov 2014) since I last re-watched it, as I thought there might be a chance it could improve, but I was wrong. it stayed the same in that it's average/forgettable. I can't believe I used to think that movie was a 9/10 in the past til Nov 2014 (when it went from a 9/10 to a 5/10) as my previous viewing in June 2012 it's 9/10 remained. so basically one could say it took a hit for me somewhere between those 2012 and 2014 viewings, it's just I did not officially dis it til that Nov 2014 viewing. but anyways... I did finish Dexter (2006-2013) (bumped from a 7.5-8/10 to a 8/10) and it remains my #3 TV show behind Breaking Bad (2008-2013)/The Sopranos (1999-2007) (both tied for my #1 spot @ 10/10 each).

It looks a lot like "Taxi Driver" in particular. I guess where it felt different for me was the mean spirit "Joker" had...and was done really effectively. "Taxi Driver" seemed like a guy gradually losing it, "King of Comedy" had bitterness, but "Joker" seemed different to me because of a sort of coldness. In some places it even reminded me of "One Flew Over the Couckoo's Nest." I didn't expect mental illness to be so prevalent in the story, as the Joker seems to usually be portrayed as crazy, but also very intelligent. This Joker felt a little clumsy and unhinged on a different level. It was really well done and I was pleasantly surprised by how it went down this road. This movie has stuck with me since I left. Talked about it with a lot of co-workers today who'd also just seen it. "Taxi Driver" came up a lot with nearly everyone.

I really liked it and thankfully the Taxi Driver and King of Comedy homages are limited to mostly visual references (which is still kind of stupid, but whatever).
I was pretty impressed overall, especially since this is coming from Todd Phillips. He’s done nothing before this to impress me, but he did great work as writer/director for this. Hopefully he stays away from the comedy genre and continues to make movies like this for a little while.
