[...]a model that was based in part on unpaid contributors[...] But they do expect their customers to pay for the magazine? So if everybody has to pay for goods and services, but nobody shall earn money for their work, how shall the economy work in the long run?!

The times, they be a-changing.
Back in the day, Sports Illustrated was a necessity. My mom got me a subscription one Christmas and I kept it for like 10 years. Now, I can't remember the last time I've read one.
Same deal with Rolling Stone.

I subscribed I think '96-'99.
I was a day-one'r on their website, until 10's when f'n ad banners filling 60% of my reading space wouldn't vanish, & they very poorly led on the wave of autoplay vids. For a long form experience, those 2 atrocities were a death knell for my relationship with them.
Peter King nicely went to NBC & that's that.

Anybody have any idea what "half" the staff translates into (in terms of actual numbers)? Although I may have missed it, I didn't see any indication as to what kinds of numbers they're referring to here.....in other words, if it's 'tens' of people, hundreds, or thousands of people that will end up losing their jobs (even though it's clear from this story, that NOTHING seems certain at this particular point in time)? Anybody have any idea (roughly) how many people were on that staff to begin with ?? SAVE FERRIS

Now, I can't remember the last time I've read one. Same deal with Rolling Stone. CNN stopped being a news delivery channel in favour of news analysis. SI should've jumped into sports analysis, rather than trying to keep up with the hot-takers. Heck, even Bill Simmons & Chuck Klosterman discussed this stuff latest pod - if Tiger Woods wins a Masters in the 90's, & you read about it in your SI later that Thursday, it's terrific. Now if Tiger wins a Masters & you've not read the story within 36hrs, it's ancient history.

I can read, don't need to see a video. I quit subscribing to the magazine long ago. Too much golf

lols As a Canadian, there was insufferable coverage of college basketball for without March Madness I wouldn't care a lick. I don't need a book about some billion dollar bball coach struggling with a 3 game losing streak in January. I've several of their year ender issues late 90's/early 00's. Back when those mattered. Same with Entertainment Weekly, their year enders were f'n boss. Now they're a handful of pages in between the latest Taylor Swift noise. I don't even think I've any recent Patriots SB issue, which 15yrs ago would be blasphemy. The last biggies I grabbed were Canada 2010 Hockey/Olympics & last spring's Raptors title, & even that was kinda meh with all the local coverage I'd already consumed.

Now, I can't remember the last time I've read one. Same deal with Rolling Stone. Mine was The Sporting News. The highlight of the week was the day TSN came. That rag went downhill fast. BaseballAmerica is doing the same. When they went to a glossy cover, I knew the end was coming. I've subscribed since 1990 but I doubt I will now. RIP, actual magazines

I'll say I still buy my copies of Street & Smith (R.I.P. The Sporting News banner*) Baseball preview & NFL preview. I also buy The Hockey News NHL preview. They're bathroom readers. I keep them until the final play of the final game. They've stepped their games up on roster coverage, & deep minor league player blips for MLB & NHL respectively. I don't always want to need online to do a quick info checkup.

SAVE FERRISNYT says "The number of those who lost their jobs under the magazine’s new steward, Maven, a digital platform company in Seattle, was not immediately clear."

So do I get a free journalist with my next subscription, or just another SI sweatshirt?

I will miss their annual soft core porn issue.
But seriously, I’ve been a subscriber since I was a kid, read them cover to cover. Stopped a year or so ago and don’t miss it much. Their website is good and terrible. Good when you can actually get to an article you’re interested in, terrible for the layout and overdose of ads and, as previously mentioned by others, the god-awful auto play videos. I pretty much stopped going to their website when Peter King left MMQB.

I read Airbnb's magazine, it's actually pretty good. I also read Whiskey Advocate because I get a one-year free subscription with my purchase of a VIP ticket to the annual NYC Whiskey Fest, held in December.
That magazine is OK, usually just pimping whatever brands are paying for ad space but sometimes they have great articles about new distilleries, new processes, or biographies about players in the industry.

SI was always more pictures and features. If you wanted more "meat" it was The Sporting News. Now both are essentially gone. SI was worth it for the long articles, usually the last one in the issue. I guess now if you want something about the NFL, you go to their website. The Athletic is damned good for good sports journalism, but you have to pay for it. On All in the Family, Stivic told Archie once "The world is changing" and Archie replied "Yeah, but everytime it changes, it bites me in the butt".

I'll be happily reading a story and suddenly some morons voice will be assaulting my ears. Then I have to search for the damn video which is always hidden away on the opposite end of the page just to hit pause. I rarely bother anymore and just leave the site.

Within days, the layout of their website has changed for the worse. This happens to all my favorite sites over the years. I used to visit AVClub every day but they were bought out and changed the layout to accommodate the "quick swiping" style of smartphones - plastering photos and graphics everywhere, prioritizing headlines for clicks, and making actual reviews and articles nigh on impossible to find.

I use Edge note function, which disables interactivity (you can write/draw all over the page if you want). Alas, it only scrolls for a few pages before you've gotta refresh.
