Some people can't connect with sci-fi or fantasy.

Maybe he just means they're not movies of great depth and are more like product. That they don't show off the power of cinema in terms of things like cinema verte or something like that.

Superhero movies are the Westerns of today, that guys like Scorsese and Spielberg grew up watching and adoring. Not every one of them was The Searchers or High Noon, most were just mass-produced assembly line studio products, made on the cheap for mass consumption. I respect the hell out of Marty, but he's missing the mark on this one.

He shouldn't be coming out in public saying that but I admire his courage.

OP can post his actual quote:
“I don’t see them. I tried, you know? But that’s not cinema. Honestly, the closest I can think of them, as well made as they are, with actors doing the best they can under the circumstances, is theme parks. It isn’t the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”
It's an interesting observation, but I strongly disagree. The exact reason why I am a big fan of Marvel is not just because of the sci fi but precisely because I connect with some of the characters through an "emotional, psychological experience." If I were not able to do that, I would not like the Marvel films as much, it's that simple. Admittedly, it doesn't hurt that I read the graphic novels as well, and so in my mind the often deeper meaning in book form reflects upon my movie watching experience.
And to spin it the other way around - I have tried but heavily failed to find an "emotional, psychological experience" and connection with almost all of Scorsese's gangster movies, themes and characters. Fine movies in other aspects they may be, but they have not worked for me in that way.
With that said, Scorsese is still a brilliant filmmaker and some of his best movies (my favorite movies from him to be more exact) have indeed achieved that "emotional, psychological experience," in a more impactful way than almost any other director. The Last Temptation of Christ, The King of Comedy, Taxi Driver, Silence. He is one of my top favorites and his greatness is undisputed. But I just strongly disagree with his opinion here.

I wonder how Scorsese feels about DC Movies.
The reason why is because his friend Robert De Niro is in "JOKER" and isn't that DC ?

cinema verite; a type of cinema that stresses unbiased realism. This is from the American Heritage dictionary. I would suggest that this is what Scorsese was referring to. Super hero films are clearly a genre of cinema.

He's right. Most of these new superhero movies are dumb and most of you are dumb for consuming them mindlessly without critical thought.

Wow. I must really thank Marty and some of you posters. The fact that he has stated that he doesn't like Marvel movies, and opined that they are not cinema, and the subsequent pearls of posts, has given a moment of clarity and made me realise how dumb i am and need educating....perhaps to more boob orientated or miserable gangster films. I am going to stop liking and mindlessly consuming Marvel fims now, post haste.

I'm not a fan of most of these superhero films, and I agree that they are for the most part the "Western" of the 21st century, but I don't think I could handle another Scorsese gangster film. Geez.

Although this isn't anything new, but a problem with comic book/superhero films are how they're so overly commercial and unnecessarily omnipresent. But when done right, they have fascinating characterizations and edge-of-your-seat set pieces.
