I love the quality of Blu Ray but I rarely find $5 blu ray deals, and besides once you put in a DVD and watch for a few minutes it doesn't really matter despite the quality difference. That being said for new releases I almost always buy Blu-Ray.

Definitely think Blu Rays came along too soon after DVDs, I never had the urge to buy a heap of films on the format like I did with DVDs

I mainly buy DVDs. A lot of the stuff which interests me (such as silent films and early television) generally isn't available on Blu-Ray (there are some silents on Blu-ray, but even now they are usually only released on DVD. A shame as even 100-year-old films can benefit from Blu-ray. I can also think of a number of 1950s TV series shot on 35mm film which could benefit from a Blu-ray release).

There is a shop in my nearest town that sells DVD's for 50p each while the average price of Blu-Rays is £7 so i generally buy 5 or 6 DVD's a week and pick up the occasional Blu-Ray bargain

Cool guys cool. I usually buy Blu-Ray if its a new release that I can't wait to see, so I don't wait for price drops. Now for "average" films or ones that I prefer not to pay full price on I just wait for the DVD to drop to nearly nothing.

Mostly blu-rays now, though I still have a lot of DVDs and I'm not against buying DVDs if it's a good deal.

I've found that the sound system is what makes or breaks my personal experience, not the visual quality. Therefore, I usually go for the DVD.
For instance, my sound system is okay and doable for watching movies, but it's nothing special. Then I watched The Dark Knight at a buddy of mine's house and the movie was actually better (and it's my favorite movie; real original, huh?). His TV is just okay, though, not HD. His surround sound system, however, is the best I've ever heard and it elevated that movie to virtual perfection.
I'm sure for some the visual aspect is far more important. That's when Blu-Ray can be nice.

I only buy blu-ray if there's a lot of special effects that look better in high definition, otherwise I stick to DVD.

DVDs for guilty pleasures & still for Disney - I've read poor things about classic Disney losing some of its aged 'magic' on blu.
All in all, my home purchasing has gone way way down in the past 5-10yrs. I buy new on blu yet maybe just 1-3 titles a year instead of the 5-15 I used to in the 00's.

Well, I started buying DVDs around 2003/2004, and I have an excessively large number of DVDs in my movie collection. (Don't ask how many, because I have lost count).
I already have most of the movies, up until 2016, that I want... so... I see no big reason to buy them again on Blu-Ray, and for the most part I don't need or desire to have some "romantic comedy" on 4K Blu-Ray. I don't see what is to be gained there...
I still have a DVD player. My Desktop Computer has a DVD drive, and has DVD player software. My old Laptop has a DVD drive (Which no longer works) and DVD Player Software & my Laptop has USB Ports...I also have a portable USB DVD drive. All of my friends and family still have DVD players...Not sure about Blu-Ray players.
So, I can't buy Blu-Rays, if I want to watch movies on all this equipment...
With that said, I do have ONE Blu-Ray player, which I really use all the time... Blu-Rays player do play DVDs too!
When I purchased it, I did purchase a few Blu-Ray "Upgrades" for a couple of my favorite movies I already had on DVD. Aliens (1986) for example!
I have a 18.5 Inch HDTV LCD Widescreen TV, which is actually a fairly small TV.
While I did notice some that "Aliens" (1986) did look better on Blu-Ray than it did on DVD, the difference on my small TV was not significant enough to stop buying DVDs altogether. As I said... I don't need or desire to have some "romantic comedy" on 4K Blu-Ray.
It really depends on the Genre. And there are some other reasons too...
Money plays and important part in my buying decisions too. Many stores have a "Cheepo" bin for DVDs. You can find some good movies in them, and you can buy 4 or 5 DVDs to usually one Blu-Ray. Hard to argue with that!
Availability plays a factor too.
I like buying older TV Shows. Many of those are only available on DVD. You don't have a choice. But even when you do, cost differences can be a major factor in choosing to buy DVDs. I recently bought the entire series of "Star Trek DS9" for $80.00 on DVD. It was on sale too...($30.00-$40.00 off!). Blu-Ray was closer to $200.00. Even if it was not on sale, I was not going to pay another $80.00 for Blu-Ray.
Lately, I've been buying a lot of classic hollywood movies, that my favorite actress starred in. Only 53 of the 73 movies she starred in are available on DVD. Of those 53 movies...Only THREE are currently available on both DVD & Blu-Ray. Again...I don't have a choice. DVD it must be!
Special Effects & Details.
I am finding that older movies, don't look as good as they did on VHS and Cable TV. Why? For Example: You can see wires holding up, SciFi Spaceships & Human actors flying like Peter Pan. And that is on DVD! I can only imagine what they look like on Blu-Ray. I have yet to see anything on 4K Blu-Ray. I certainly don't want to see what these special effects look like in that resolution.
I am sure 60 inch TVs brings all that out even more so...
I also don't want to see someone's face up close either. 5 O'Clock Shadow. The inside of someone's nose. NO THANKS!
When it comes to all this, DVDs are prefered!
DVDs usually suit me just fine for most of my needs.
However, as I noted above, there are a few films, that I do enjoy on Blu-Ray.
And when I can, I like to buy any NEW movies on the DVD/Blu-Ray Combo Packs. It usually is the best of both worlds for me. And yes, I do choose to watch the Blu-Ray copy on my one Blu-Ray player.
In the end, it really all depends on a bunch of different things...
But I do buy Both.

DVDs for guilty pleasures & still for Disney - I've read poor things about classic Disney losing some of its aged 'magic' on blu. Yeah, like I said in my previous post... Older movies are not looking so good on today's high resolution high tech equimpent. Wirework can be seen for example. Somehow the older tech, hid much of that. Either it was a smaller picture, or it was blurred out.
