We all know that the MVP is basically a QB award these days. In the recent-ish past some RB's have won it like Adrian Peterson, Shaun Alexander, and LaDainian Tomlinson.
Shaun Alexander won the MVP in 2005 rushing for 1,880 YDs and 27 Rushing TDs (28 Total) which lead the league. The TD's tied the career high for a season.
LaDainian Tomlinson won the MVP in 2006 rushing for 1,815 YDs and 28 TDs leading the league in both. Also he had 508 YDs receiving and 3 TDs. He had 2,323 yards from scrimmage only 1 yard shy of Steve Jackson for the league lead.
Adrian Peterson won the MVP in 2012 rushing for 2,097 YDs and 12 TDs (13 Total) which lead the league in rushing. This was 9 yards shy of breaking Dickerson's record of 2,105 YDs.
So let's look at Christian McCaffrey's numbers currently.
587 Rushing yards w/ 117.4 per game avg. (Both League Leading) 6 TDs 279 YDs Receiving 1 TD 866 YDs from Scrimmage (League Leading)
This puts CMC on pace for: 1,878 YDs Rushing 19 TDs 892 YDs Receiving 3 TDs 2,771 YDs from Scrimmage (Record Setting by over 200 YDs)
It seems for Running Backs to win the MVP they need to have a record breaking/unworldly season. I think CMC is having that season. Now if the Panthers end up sucking the rest of the way and miss the playoffs he obviously won't win it. But I ask, can he? What are his chances? What does he have to ultimately accomplish by seasons end to win it? Guys like Mahomes, Wilson, and Watson are putting claims to it and they're Quarterbacks.

He sets the record for total yards by that much, he will get it

It’s definitely a possibility, he’s an amazing player who’s been the main key for the Panthers playing well now, but I think a lot of it depends on if the Panthers continue to play well, if they miss the playoffs it will be hard for him to win MVP. I would say he’s a frontrunner for MVP now, along with Mahomes and Wilson.

I think that if CMC keeps pace with his numbers and Cam misses most of the season and they finish with a winning record while missing the playoffs he could still win it. This of course would have to mean that no QB had good enough numbers to take it.

We'll see if he can hold up. All it took for him to have a breakout season was me comparing him to Danny Woodhead.
