Can fame even be measured? I mean what is fame anyway?

I don't know how many levels of fame there might be but being able to find info on you through a search engine is a good baseline level on the way to being famous.

I don't know how many levels of fame there might be but being able to find info on you through a search engine is a good baseline level on the way to being famous. practically everybody can be found on line ... I think another good devise is: you find multiple posts that you didn’t put up and they are not your friends or acquaintance that did it. the next phase is when there would be people wanting to interview you repeatedly or take photos of you for their publication just just because you are you. And do this a few times around and you most likely get to being recognized on the street one day and then the shitstorm starts

Not sure how relevant/up-to-date this is in the age of YouTube, etc. but: wiki

Anyways, there are people who literally are unknown to the internet. People from tribes in Africa or the Amazon Rainforest for instance. So I consider it a good starting point since there's some people who don't use the internet and don't have a permanent address. I chose the search engine idea because it's a baseline level for whether or not somebody can find you if they have a reason to. I could have said the phone book but with people with only cell phones and also countries where people usually have only cell phones it's harder to find people that way now. I'd be lying if I said I thought of people in third world (what does that term even mean after the Cold War)countries and indigenous tribes when I first typed that but it makes it a good case so I might as well roll with it.

I would affiliate someone like Tom Cruise with that upper echelon of fame as damn near everyone knows who he is unless they have been living under a rock. because others come and go but he's one of those who won't be forgotten anytime soon. but like Nora basically said, that's a pretty good way to separate those with true fame vs semi-famous etc is whether that famous person could walk down a street and plenty of people would recognize that person or not. that separates the major stars from everyone else. so while I am not really sure on the OP's 'how many level of fame are there?' thing, I tend to pretty much sum things up based on what I said above otherwise your not THAT famous. but putting this aside (the major star level of fame) for a moment... I would imagine one could get a rough estimate of how much lower they are from that standard based on how many do recognize them walking down the street as I would imagine there are some in acting that us around here (i.e. IMDB2) would recognize that a fair amount of the general public might not etc. NoraExactly! that's a great simple test to see the true stars from everyone else pretty much. that's why I used Tom Cruise as a great example as damn near everyone would know who he is unless they are living under a rock etc.

The success of the person can be measured by their longevity within whatever field that made them famous. The dynamic can be different though, depending on what it is that brought them to prominence.

I don't think there is a specific standard that you measure fame by. It could be somebody that was on tv one time that received a certain amount of recognition. Or somebody that is a really big star

These days there's youtubers that are much more recognizable than a lot of tv stars.
