To me it was the decade where the 12" single really took off. Some bands would give an extra track or two, but many went for the Remix. Some were were great and embellished the original track, some were a mess of echo, share drum, repetition etc. And a few created something that rendered the original track almost unrecogniseable (the ZTT label were masters of this)
Any favourites? Good examples? Bad examples?
A good one. It just extends the single without messing with it too much
A bad one
A great one. Not a remix, but the actual full length version of the track

Torch Song - "White Night" (I prefer this over the shorter version of the song, the 12" format gives the song a bigger sound and more room to breathe.)
Discharge - "The More I See" (The drum-bass intro thing isn't on the 7" version and, predictably, there's more guitar wanking on this version.)

.
This is monster. I adore this and used to play at the end of parties and stuff...nowadays just with the headphones.... on 11. Everything and the kitchen sink thrown in....some real trippy detours .

I bought this and the 12" disc was great because the sound was crystal clear on a quite 'heavy' disc. It was not a remix, I think, just the single in unedited form. Fantastic. Great tune, simple witty lyrics. Needless to say, the disc is no longer in my possession - where did our old records go???
