I know I’ll get some heat for this but I prefer the new. More compelling stories, more character driven, more chemistry between characters and more action. The 70’s crime dramas are what I love most but this is one instance I have to go with the updated version. Thoughts? Death threats?

I really enjoy the new H5O. I've seen every episode and I continue to watch it. But I only like the case of the week action parts. All of the side stories and lengthy story arcs have completely failed to get my attention. I don't even remember any of them. Some examples;
I have no idea where Danno's second kid came from. I have no idea where Danno's ex wife lives or what her current marital status is. I have no idea why Kono's ex-husband is now a cop. I have no idea what McGarret's mother's story arc was. I don't know the name of the old ME or why anyone cared when he left because I did not remember any of the flash back scenes they showed in his final episode. I do remember them spending a lot of time building a restaurant that they sold and forgot about 2 minutes after building it.
The one side character I did like was Wo Fat but they killed him off.
As for the original show. I have not seen every epsiode but I remember that it was a classic.

I didn't care about the kid but I liked the stuff with the wife. I really liked the guy Max the old ME. He left to do some humanitarian stuff in some other country. I forgot the whole story. But I do agree with a lot of what you say. I believed we discussed that on another board about Adam becoming a cop. That kinda didn't pass the smell test with me and I didn't buy it. But I really liked the Mcgarret's mother story. But apperantly I was the only one that did. The restaurant thing I agree came and went really fast. The original series I did see every episode, but it just fell a little flat for me. That is not usually the case for me for crime dramas of that time period.

I discovered the original "Hawaii Five-O" in syndication, and own the first nine seasons on DVD. I started watching the new "Hawaii Five-0" when it debuted, but bailed after a season and a half. I can't believe that the new series has lasted as long as it has. Give me classic "Five-O" any day! P.S. I am a published author on here on the The Hawaii Five-O Home Page.

I normally wouldn’t even watch a remake much less pick it over the classics. I think the new show got a lot better after the first couple of seasons

I normally wouldn’t even watch a remake much less pick it over the classics. I think the new show got a lot better after the first couple of seasons Maybe the new show did get better as it went on. I thought the first season finale was great. But then it seemed they didn't know where to go from there. It soon got to the point where keeping up with the new show was like a chore, and I stopped watching. I did check out their remake of "Hookman" however, and thought it was above average. But I always felt that Alex O'Loughlin was miscast as McGarrett. My best friend and I watched this show in syndication, and to this day, we don't call it "Hawaii Five-O". Jack Lord was such a commanding presence that we nicknamed him, and his show, "Lord Jack". Some years back I created a slideshow to illustrate the difference between the two series: s1196.photobucket.com/user/alpha128_imdb/slideshow/Hawaii%2520Five-O?sort=3

Old. I don't even see why they call the new version Hawaii 5-0; original H50 had a look, feel and vibe you could cut with a cheese knife, and the reboot just looks like every other modern-day generic cop series.

New, but I also generally dislike most if not all pre 1980's entertainment, very few things before that really work for me, I preferred the new show in the first few seasons though.

I watched "Stranger In Our Own Land" and it made me mad at the critics in recent times who said tv didn't grow up until the Sopranos.
No one is going to tell me Simon Oakland's speech about Hawaii isn't magnificent acting. I can't think of anything in the Sopranos that comes close to that for a profound passionate monologue.

Agreed. Sick of back-patting millenials lecturing us on the 'immaturity' of all things television, prior to their miraculous creative advent. Yes, television back then presented bucketfuls of dross; it also presented some strikingly mature and intelligent productions. Just like television of today. The immature crap outweighs the worthwhile and thought-provoking by pretty close to the same ratio now just as it did back then.

Funny you should mention that. Along with my solo "The Wild Wild West" rewatch, I also started a "Hawaii Five-O: TOS" rewatch (for me) with friends (first watch for them); we recently viewed "Strangers In Our Own Land". Season One of "Hawaii Five-O: TOS" is good, but IMO it gets better with each succeeding season, ultimately peaking around Season Six. But even after Creator/Executive Producer Leonard Freeman's untimely death after Season Six wrapped production, the series kept going strong for about three more seasons. Season Nine did have a higher percentage of stinkers than had been usual, but Season Ten is when the repetition and mediocrity really set in. I haven't seen anything beyond that point, but Mr. Mike’s Episode Ratings indicate that things failed to improve, and actually got worse.

I watched the one with Sal Mineo as the self-kidnap victim. Managed to get some tear-jerker emotion at the end when his father hugs him. The title intro for Hawaii-5-O has to be one of the top ten best. It is so well designed with music and imagery.

I have one or two seasons of the original on DVD but I have never watched them.
I started watching the new one when it premiered, even though I had never watched the original, for two main reasons: I had just been to Hawaii on holidays so I wanted to see the scenery, and the Asian chick from Battlestar Galactica was in it. I watched for two or three seasons, then stopped when I realised I wasn't enjoying it enough to justify it.

It's good, and I recommend it, but the majority of my favorite episodes of Hawaii Five-O come from later in the series.

Another really good one. And they Painted Daisies on his Coffin.
Dano is charged with killing an unarmed suspect. Gavin MacLeod is "Big Chicken" a drug dealer. I am not familiar with the actress playing the drug addict but its a really strong moving performance. McGarrett is such an asshole but it goes with the job.

My rewatch with friends is progressing, but we are still on Season 1. That's partly because we are alternating with episodes of Frasier, and partly because we took a long break due to COVID-19 concerns. Gavin MacLeod returns as "Big Chicken" in "The Box" (S01E16).
