To clarify, y'all are not the asswits and don't need to look up James Fenimore Cooper.
Yankees, comes from Yingees/Yengees, however you want to spell it in English, which is what the English in America were called by many Native Americans.
The Dutch for "John" guess doesn't even remotely make sense, and the entries containing it universally contain "maybe", "perhaps" or "might". Like, if you didn't know, why didn't you keep looking? Etymology much?
