I'm not talking about Babe Ruth days. In your lifetime has a team you root for ever had the hands down, no questions asked best player in the sport?
For me I've experienced it a few times::
NY Giants - Lawrence Taylor NY Mets - Dwight Gooden NY Yankees - Reggie Jackson, Ron Guidry, and possibly Don Mattingly NY Rangers - Wayne Gretzky NY Nets - Doctor J NY Knicks - Jeremy Lin (it wasn't for whole season, but for two weeks Lin was hands down the best basketball player on Earth)

AFL- Nathan Buckley (well one of the big 3 along with Voss in Brisbane and Hird in Essendon) Briefly Dane Swan as well.
NRL- not in my life time. Cricket- Steve Waugh, Ponting, McGrath, Warne, you name it, we had it.
NFL- Emmett Smith (disputed, but he was pretty bloody good)
MLB- Frank Thomas as close as we've had. NBA- Hakeem probably was the year Jordan was out. NHL- plenty of elite players from 2010-15 but no Crosby or Ovechkin.

1. Red Sox- 1978 Jim Rice, 1986 Roger Clemens, Pedro Martinez, 2018 Mookie Betts 2. Sf Giants- Barry Bonds 3. Celtics- Larry Bird 1. Everybody on Earth knows that Ron Guidry was the MVP in '78. Clemens is a steroid boy. Can't count him. Pedro was better on the Expos and the Yankees owned him anyway. Even Pedro said, "The Yanks are my daddy." Betts - don't follow baseball enough now to know, but with your track record I know you are wrong about Betts 2. Bonds was a steroid boy. Can't count him. 3. Bird - uhh, utilize Google or Wiki and type in "Magic"

NFL- Emmett Smith (disputed, but he was pretty bloody good) No, I accept that. Maybe in some year or another a guy was better, but Emmett sure was a major force in the NFL. That bastard used to beat us single-handedly. One game - it was opening day - on the very first play from scrimmage he peeled off an 80 yard TD run. We were finished for that game.

Those numbers are acceptable. Averaging five or six a game. Not fantastic, but his offense in those games sure outweighed a few turnovers. Just look at the points per game he was putting up in that two week run: 25, 28, 23, 38, 20, 27, 10, 26, 28, 21 They said no other NBA player ever had a run like that. Yeah, maybe now Harden or Curry can do that, but Lin did.

It might not say that on Wikipedia where you look up all you know about American sports, but it's true. So they don't count. Jim Rice actually did win the MVP in 1978, not Ron Guidry, so wrong again. Wayne Gretzky was the greatest player when he played for Oilers and Kings, by the time he got to Rangers he was a shell of what he once was, so wrong again. Jeremy Lin is a gook, so wrong again. You might have some soccer players you can mention, Ringo, but when it comes to American sports, you couldn't be any dumber. Seriously folks, you can't make this stuff up. This version of marco is just a pale comparison of mediocrity. Stick to watching John Oliver, kid, in other areas of thought you're out of your league.

LT and Dwight did recreational drugs. Coke doesn't make you throw a fast ball faster. 2. So you are one of those dopes that thinks Rice won the MVP in '78. Hey, schmuck, that's how real men separate sports fans from dweebs: who won the MVP in '78? If the response is Jim Rice, we know they are not a sports fan. Stick to reading LORD OF THE RING books, Frodo.
3. Wayne Gretzky can skate onto the ice right now and be the best player in the league. Once again proof that you know zilch about sports. 4. Jeremy Lin was born in California. Makes him an American citizen, not a gook. Sorry, the wall you and your butt buddy Trump want to build would not keep Lin out.

Steve Carlton was the best pitcher in the game for several years, winning 4 Cy Youngs along the way.
Schmidt In 80-81 was at his peak.
During the Broad Street Bully days a case could be made for Bobby Clarke or Bernie Parent.

What time is John Oliver on?

During the Broad Street Bully days a case could be made for Bobby Clarke or Bernie Parent. Maybe Parent, not Clarke. Clarke wasn't even the best forward on his own team. Reggie Leach, Rick MacLeish and Billy Barber were the far better players. Carlton played while Seaver and Palmer and even Ryan were white hot. Carlton was not the hands down best pitcher. Plus Dock Ellis threw a no hitter while tripping out on LSD. Did Carlton ever achieve that? Schmidt? Never liked him at all so I can't be honest about him. But I never considered him like a LeBron or a Lawrence Taylor or a Gretzky.
