It’s a tad bit overrated, but I appreciate it a lot. It’s a very solid film.

What I liked about it was the understated, real feel about it. What I didn't like was the overall feeling it gave me.
When it came out, I didn't want to see it, having read the book being enough to scare me. My friends tricked me into meeting them at a theater, and they bullied me to go in and watch it with them. I had my eyes shut for most of the bad parts. It was only many, many years later that I actually was able to watch it without hiding my eyes.

I watched this movie back in 2001 when i was 18, and i was very disappointing by it, i was told it was one of the scariest movies of all time and it was not scary at all.

Easily the scariest film I've seen.

I had read the novel, which is very good, but in no way did that prepare me for what I was about to experience watching the film.
It was such an unsettling feeling I have never encountered with any other film. It really did get to me.
I have no desire to see it again.

Scary enough or not, it's a very entertaining movie, which I rate 9/10. It's a unique and groundbreaking movie with a fantastic musical score. I love it, and I enjoy rewatching it.

I saw it at a very young age (twice) and it spooked me for years and years to the point that I was afraid to watch it then finally around 2000 I got the nerve to check it out again and then again more recently. I suppose the novelty in it is the possession of a child-there had been other horror films that were doing possession of one kind or another and even evil children but not such a combination. Like every blockbuster of the 70s, the primary driving force is the visual fx design. Fact is that if the makeup on Regan was more traditional it would not be well-received. Things like the words on her stomach or vomiting in someone's face were groundbreaking in cinematic experience for the time.

When I was around 14, some cable channel was showing it. I had heard a lot about the film, and had already seen horror movies like The Shining and Halloween, so I figured I could handle watching The Exorcist.
Even on cable tv, that movie freaked me the fuck out. Probably my Catholic upbringing, but man, The Exorcist scared me like no movie I've ever seen, or ever will see. An absolute classic.
Oh, that voice!

It's one of my favorite horror films of all time. Almost everything works in the film from the performances, themes, and the grisly scares. I honestly think I prefer the Director's Cut since I like the spider-walk scene.

Maltin Movie Guide Review:
The Exorcist - 3.5 out of 4 stars
"Intense, well-mounted adaptation of William Peter Blatty's best-seller, calculated to keep your stomach in knots from start to finish. Blair is "normal" 12-year old girl whose body is possessed by the Devil. Miller a trouble priest who attempts to confront the demon in her--and in himself. Oscar Winner for Blatty's screenplay; vocal effects by Mercedes McCambridge. Followed by two sequels, a prequel, and countless imitations. Reissued in 2000 with 11 minutes of (mostly needless) additional footage."

An important movie in movie history that looks very dated now. Give me "The Omen," every time.

One of the best horror films of all time, very intelligently written with a great cast. I'm an atheist who has a lot of contempt for religion, but I really respected the film's examination and treatment of faith. It would never be made today, first because no modern film pitched to a mainstream audience would take so long to build up to the all out supernatural elements (modern audiences having no patience), and second because having the sexual stuff involving a kid would be off limits.
