In USA (who cares about you foreigners) the most popular last name is Smith. Name who you think are the best Smiths in all our sports.
Football - Emmitt Smith Hockey - Billy Smith Baseball - Lee Smith Basketball - J.R. Smith Tennis - Stan Smith Boxing - Bonecrusher Smith Soccer - who cares
I suspect some of you might name others, but you won't top my list. What say you?

Steve Smith > j.R. Ozzie Smith > Lee Take away all the nonsense, JR was pretty darn good. Yeah, Steve was better, but I really do think had JR really focused (and stopped smoking the weed), JR is the best Smith in basketball. Even better than Kenny Smith whom someone above mentioned. I knew someone might go with Ozzie over Lee Smith. I can't. Lee Smith was Mariano before there was Mariano. Ozzie was a TON of hype. Lee Smith was really great and no hype involved.

Lee Smith was Mariano before there was Mariano? Lee Smith's postseason record: 0-2, 1 save, 8.44 ERA, 1.875 WHIP.

Reggie Smith is another good baseball playing smith - - over 2000 hits and a 64.6 WAR.

Reggie Smith is another good baseball playing smith - - over 2000 hits and a 64.6 WAR. He crossed my mind. But still Lee Smith is the best Smith in baseball. I can actually settle this by asking one question: who was the more dominating Smith: Ozzie, Reggie, or Lee Smith? Anybody who was alive when Lee Smith was on the mound knows that he was an intimidating force out there.

Football: for the defence Bruce Smith. You want to compare Super Bowl victories between Bruce Smith and Emmitt Smith? We are not talking defense or offense here. Just best Smith. If I asked you for best Smiths song I wouldn't be making categories like best slow Smiths song, best Smiths song with strings. No, simply best Smiths song ("This Charming Man" it is, by the way). Same with this thread. No categories like best Smith on defense or best Smith pitcher or best Smith goalie... No, just best Smith in each sport, period.

Yeah, but one is in the 'Super Bowl Winners' wing of the Hall, and the other is just in the basement.

It’s threads like this that make me realise how myopic American Sports fans truly are.
As we speak, a player whose in the conversation for 2nd best batsman in cricket of all time (a period in excess of 140 years), and not just any bloke named smith, doesn’t even get a mention. Aussie Rules or Rugby League - yeah I can understand. But cricket is a major international sport, and the 1st gets a “who cares” too. Instead, they are shooting the shit about a couple of nondescript Baseballers that are slightly better than the norm.

I know right. I remember another thread where an American Idiot trued to argue Babe Ruth, who was at his smallest about 50 lbs overweight, was a legitimate athlete while Don Bradman, a fit country lad and statistically the greatest team sport athlete of all time by a significant margin, wasn't. I have no horse in the baseball vs cricket debate. I played both sports growing up and a lot of the skills are interchangable (as is also true of hockey or field hockey as yanks refer to it). I still watch and enjoy both now. And the argument from both sides essentially boils down to needing to grow up watching the sport to appreciate the skills and nuances of the games, and lacking appreciation of these nuances make the games inaccessible.
