www.indiewire.com/2019/10/fat-thor-debate-marvel-taika-waititi-1202182949/amp/In an interview with Yahoo while promoting “Jojo Rabbit,” Waititi said his “Thor: Love and Thunder” script is completed but it’s not finalized whether Thor will appear as he did in “Endgame” or return to his more muscular physique. “This is an ongoing debate that we’re still having at Marvel,” Waititi said. “‘Cause we’re trying to figure out how long — how many months or years — this is after ‘Endgame,’ at what point does this take place? Do you want him to stay fat or go back to normal?

Fat Thor served his purpose in Endgame; it's time for him to return to buff Thor. Granted, if the story takes place fairly soon after it could be problematic explaining his return to form so soon. So the easy fix is to simply set it a year afterwards, that's plenty of time for him to get back into sparring shape.

Oh for the love of... Haven't they learned by now that Fat Thor is divisive whereas fit Thor is generally well-liked?

They're going to keep introducing new ways to adapt this character to keep him from becoming stale and to keep Hemsworth interested. You could tell he was growing bored with the role. I think fat Thor was just the beginning with this new humorous take on the character. Not what I would prefer, but I guess they have to do something new to keep people coming back. I'm open to whatever they do. It's not like we didn't already have a more faithful take of the character in the earlier films.

Common sense would tell you to return him back to his physically fit state.

Common sense would tell you to return him back to his physically fit state. Except MCU movies are meant to be brainless. fat thor does make sense in that context.

The reason he became fat was depression and tragedy. A rock bottom for all the losses in his story arc. The tragedy is in juxtaposition to the humor derived from his appearance. It's bitter sweet. Chris is good at playing hurt/devastated characters and still be funny. That rock bottom was earned. Think of Thor's story. Favorite Son with loving father, brother and mother the center of a kingdom loved by all. Cast out finds out his Brother betrayed him. Loses his Mother, his Father, his girl friend, his Brother, his best friend, his home and capped off with the guilt of Trillions of Life forms dead because he failed.
His healing needs to be learned and take time too. Now his healing will be visually represented by him looking godly again, but it shouldn't be over night. His downward spiral took 3 solo and 4 avengers movies. His physical and more importantly his mental healing shouldn't be a quick fix.

Sure, the movies have a silliness that I can barely tolerate sometimes, but they are not brainless. Enough time and thought was put into the films and character arcs that make them rewatchable and worthwhile when I look at it as a whole. Since we are discussing Thor, his weight gain was a visual sign of his failure to protect his kingdom and its people. Thor has had his "atonement with the father" moment when he met his mother and she encouraged him to move on. He realizes he is still worthy and therefore, he can drop his depression and lose weight now.

Mine is it encapsulates Rock Bottom for a Character. He is stripped of everything. Home, Hero status, looks, pride everything. Doing so where even the humor derived from the sight gag even strips away dignity for the character. Which is what depression does. They were able not only to get a laugh using a sight gag, but the use of that gag reinforces the depths to which the character fell.

Yes, because all the unemployed failed god did between Inf Wars and Endgame was sit in a hut in New Asgard, eat Earth hamburgers, and slurp beer. Of course he’s fat. And probably slept 12-15 hours a clip. On a meandering cycle that never sees him awake or asleep when he is supposed to be.

Make him fit with a fat to fit flashback sequence. This is easier than they're making it.

Some people were fine with Fat Thor. Some even liked Fat Thor. But there are very very few people out there who actually liked Fat Thor over Ragnarok Thor, and we only got a very few precious minutes of that Ragnarok Thor whereas we got a whole movie of Fat Thor. So yeah, please bring back the most well loved version of the character.
