Joe Buck's call on the Phils 2008 WS Win was better than legendary Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas People just love to hate on Bucky because it's the cool thing to do. In no universe in this even close to being true.

Joe Buck's call on the Phils 2008 WS Win was better than legendary Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas People just love to hate on Bucky because it's the cool thing to do. In no universe in this even close to being true. Bucky's call is art and majestically beautiful. It's short, simple and to the point - "Phillies are World Champions" The beauty of it is - he doesn't make himself 'the moment' - he shuts up and lets us soak it in. It's not about him - and he knows it. I still get goosebumps.

Bucky's call is art and majestically beautiful. It's short, simple and to the point - No, you are actually making a virtue of a lack of creativity. There is nothing great about "Phillies World Champions." Rather it is absurdly stupid in its obviousness. An announcer should provide more for a big moment than just what obviously happened. Let me ask you: if Al Michaels had said, "USA beats the Russians" you would have thought that was "art and majestically beautiful"?

There's nothing worse than a commentator babbling over an iconic moment. This is not about 'them' - it is about the moment. We could see with our own eyes what just happened. Let us soak it in. Here is a prime example of an iconic moment ruined by incoherent babbling: Well - the NFL has taken away the rights for clips to be reposted; however if you visit YouTube and put in 'Merrill Reese's Call of the last two plays of Super Bowl LII - it's exactly what I'm talking about.

There's nothing worse than a commentator babbling over an iconic moment. Oh, I agree with you. But to enhance the moment would be the job a professional announcer. Enhance the moment. That could be done without drawing attention away from the actual event. That could be done without making the moment about him. NY Rangers winning the Cup is a fine call: "The waiting is over." Memorable words. Summed up what we all actually felt. Hell, we were all screaming when it happened so for you to think fans hear Buck or any announcer is absurd. But it is afterwards when that final moment is played in perpetuity that we realize, "Hey, Sam Rosen made a great call when we won the Cup" and how that moment was now and forever enhanced. You are just being silly when you say "Phillies are World Champions" is a great call. Once again you are actually exalting a complete lack of creativity. Phillies are World Champions. Uhh, no shit.

I look at the quote Buck made like a Budweiser beer. It does the job - it's simple, refreshing and has an impact. Nothing flashy. No need for bells and whistles. i.e. - No need for any of these trendy IPAs the Hipsters are talking about these days asking if the certain beer is 'Hoppy' and what part of Belgium it came from. There's no need for it. A Bud will suffice and do the job.

So you answered my question if Al Michaels had said, "USA beats the Russians" you would have believed it would have been the right call and sufficed. Good God. Thank Christ you are nowhere near a microphone. This would be you: "And that's the game. Team USA 4, Russia 3." Once again, a top announcer will not draw attention to himself with a call, rather he will enhance the moment. "Do you believe in miracles? Yes!" My God, that whole event is now in history known as the "Miracle on ice." Where the fuck do you think that came from?

However I believe other calls would have sufficed as well. For instance: 'USA WINS!' See what I'm saying? Short, simple, a quick hitter. Then you let the fan soak in the moment. Or perhaps - "The United States has beaten the Soviet Union!" And then dead silence from the booth as the U.S. celebrates on the ice. Now that's a little long for the moment - but mind you it is quite simple and to the point. I think I like 'USA WINS' though.

Here's what I'm talking about.
It's short, simple and captures the moment perfectly.
You've got to pick your spots when to know when to chirp - and when to know when to keep it simple.
Listen to the master -

Dr. J was damn good in the ABA with Virginia and the Nets. And he also won a championship in Philly, something Iverson and Barkley never did. But - They were the greatest team in the history of the NBA i.e. he was surrounded by talent when A.I. and The Round Mound of Rebound rarely were and pretty much had to carry their teams. He had Moses, Andrew Toney, Mo Cheeks, Bobby Jones. A.I. had Eric Snow and Sir Charles had Scott Brooks

Can't wait to see his next post about how the perfect example for clean living of the ex-athlete is OJ Simpson.

The epic moment is when Frazier goes down. HC keeps it sweet and simple - 'Down goes Frazier!' Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier!' It's Howie's simplicity in 'the moment' that makes that moment so iconic for the viewer.

Cossell said it THREE TIMES! That's what made the call so famous. Any other announcer - just watch any fight - would simply say "Down goes Frazier." You say you like simplicity, why do you like a guy repeating over and over and over the very same thing? Plus by the second and third time Cossell was saying "Down goes Frazier," Joe Frazier WAS ALREADY UP!!! The call was over the top, wrong, and all about Howard injecting himself into the event. Seriously, kid, you have some weird ideas about calls. That "Down goes Frazier" call is infamous because it once again made Cossell look like the blowhard he can't himself from being.

What made the call famous was the shock value of the moment and those 3 simple words. 'Down Goes Frazier'. Could he have said it once? Perhaps; this is debateable. But my point is - 'Down goes Frazier' was short and sweet and to the point. Also - I'd like to add this was in Round 1 and the first of 6 times Frazier was down in the fight. It was a shocking moment - so the short and simple phrase 'Down Goes Frazier' stated only once would not have fit here. Now stating only once when the fight was stopped - 'George Foreman has beaten Joe Frazier' may have been a fitting ending. But Howie nailed this - short, sweet and to the point. 'Down Goes Frazier' stated only once would not have fit here being it was the 1st knockdown in the 1st Round and caught everyone off guard.

Drew Bledsoe once broke his finger during a 4th qtr drive against Miami. He stayed in the game and threw the winning TD pass. He joked afterward that he didn't want to come out of the game because he was afraid his backup (Scott Zolak at the time) would play well and he'd never get his job back.
