Thanks for your response, Petrolino. I do recommend both pictures: I prefer The Edge by a hair, mostly because I think the performances (particularly Hopkins's) are so good, and because of its cleverness in subtly mocking the concept of the survival-thriller even as it tells a particularly good one. (By the way, I'm sure that Mr. Tamahori had something to do with The Edge, as of course he's the credited director, but I just want to emphasize that it feels far more like a Mamet film than any of Tamahori's other pictures. Even right down to the shot choice... Maybe Tamahori just shot Mamet's script exactly as written?) Hi Salzmank. I watched 'The Edge'; really enjoyed this trip into the wilds. Nice work by Alec Baldwin as sly fashion photographer Bob Green and Anthony Hopkins as cheeky billionaire Charles Morse. Always good seeing top character players Harold Perrineau, L.Q. Jones and Kathleen Wilhoite. It works pretty well as a straight-up survival thriller thanks to Lee Tamahori's sure-footed direction. But what I enjoyed most was all the little tricks that Morse presented through applying the theoretical knowledge he'd gained to solving some pressing practical problems posed by the great outdoors. It's also nicely shot and the bear action was good too. Thanks for the recommendation!

Somehow House of Games plays like a carefully-orchestrated skit. Has anyone else noticed this? The acting and settings are secondary to the skit..about con games.

Most of his stuff is dreary. I also hate when he lets his wife, Rebecca Pidgeon, act in his movies. She's bloody awful! EDIT: I do really like Glengarry Glen Ross though. I'm inclined to agree, Carl. Glengarry worked for me, and that's about it. There's something repulsive about Mamet, IMO, that I can't quite put my finger on. I don't like him, don't trust him. Sounds funny, I know. He's got this avant garde reputation but boy, does he take the money and run. I wasn't going to post on this thread at all till I saw what you wrote. He has a lot of fans out there...
