I chose: About Schmidt 25th Hour City of God
The Two Towers ought to be in there, but I hate splitting the trilogy. It is all one film in my mind.
I did not get flamed for suggesting alternatives last time so I will risk it again. This was one of the best years in recent decades:
This quintet are all top movies Adaptation (Charlie Kaufman screenplay) Safe Conduct (Bertrand Tavernier) Hable con Ella (Pedro Almodóvar) All or Nothing (Mike Leigh) The Man Without a Past (Aki Kaurismäki)
I also liked: Daniel Deronda (UK TV mini-series) Far from Heaven (Todd Haynes) Heartlands (early Michael Sheen road movie but I would not expect Americans to "get" it. Very quirkily English). Ripley's Game White Oleander Moro No Brasil (Mika Kaurismäki) I do not usually do documentaries but made an exception in this case Dirty Pretty Things (Stephen Frears) Spirited Away (Hayao Miyazaki) I do not usually do cartoons either ... 24 Hour Party People (Michael Winterbottom) Time Out (Laurent Cantet) Y Tu Mama Tambien (Alfonso Cuarón) Hero (Yimou Zhang)
Wow! What a year!

It's fun but stupid and forgettable to me.

Adaptation was in my honorable mentions.
Killer Joe? That is from 2011. How did you make that mistake?
As people can probably tell, my taste is more towards the mainstream - with obvious exceptions. 2009 and 2011 are pretty crazy lists.

Mistakes come easily to me. I am senile and don't get much sleep these days. But thanks for pointing it out.

Highly recommended, but may not be for everyone, very understated narrative, spare dialogue, lovely score and absolutely stunning visuals. Perfect.

Ditto because I respect Fox's taste in films. He obviously means the Takeshi Kitano film (2002). When I first scanned this thread I was thinking about an earlier horror movie of the same name.
