Any movie I already hold in high regard. I'm realizing more the value or sometimes taking a substantial break before revisiting a certain film. It helps me appreciate the sometime finer details or its direction, writing, etc.. A somewhat fresh perspective after being away so long, if you will. Case in point, revisiting The French Connection and The Exorcist last week.

Agreed....my go-to movies [to be divulged soon to anyone who gives a wos'name] I may look at once a year or 18 months when my jaded palate needs replenishing. I guess your user name is French Connected....just a stab in the dark. Gene Hackman is one of my favourite actors ever. Two of the best pay-back scenes in movie history for me.... Mississippi Burning & the Narrow Margin.

I remember an odd conversation some years ago with one of my daughters who asked me hungoverish if i'd seen Popeye Doyle on the telly the previous night. After a longish monologue by me about French Connection ....she looked at me like i was crazed. Later on it turned out i misheard....she was on about POP IDOL.

My kid did something like that last year. He was talking about a movie we watched called Germans. I stared at him like a cow looks at an oncoming train. I later realize he was talking about Gremlins.

Like The Shining, this is another one I've come to appreciate more and more with subsequent viewings.

Once when channel surfing I wandered across a Spanish language station's presentation of Kenneth Brannagh's Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Hearing the dialogue in Spanish made me appreciate the picture's operatic tone more.

2 come to mind:
Pee-Wee's Big Adventure: I was(and still am) a fan of Pee Wee's comedy and was excited when a movie was coming out. I saw it in the theater and was disappointed. But with each subsequent viewing, the funnier it got. Now it's one of my all time favorite comedies.
Pulp Fiction: Thought it was ok at first viewing but with each subsequent viewing the better it got. Now I can pretty much quote it verbatim.

As Chris Stuckmann said, the more I watch Interstellar the better it gets. Something about it keeps drawing me in for repeat viewings, even though there are plot problems.

With me, I don't always catch all the details of the story and more viewings are required. Example: 2001: A Space Odyssey - I was only about 11 when I first saw it. I liked it, but there were subtleties I wasn't grasping. It was only a few years later after reading the book when my appreciation for it grew. I recently saw the 50th anniversary showing at an IMAX and loved it even more.
Or the story is so shocking and disturbing that I have to move past that to better enjoy the film.
Examples: Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? - I felt mentally exhausted after first viewing what is basically a 2-hour drunken argument. Later I viewed it more as a couple who like to play head games.
Barfly - Depressing. I thought "how can anyone live that way?" After becoming desensitized to it, I began to view it as humorous. The character of "Henry" is such an apathetic smartass.
